Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)
Pediatric & Family Practice
Position Summary
The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) provides comprehensive, patient-centered primary care to pediatric and adult patients in a family practice setting. The APRN is responsible for health promotion, disease prevention, assessment, diagnosis, treatment, patient education, and management of acute and chronic medical conditions within the APRN's education, certification, clinical privileges, and applicable state regulations.
The APRN works collaboratively with physicians, nurses, medical assistants, administrative personnel, specialists, and other healthcare professionals to promote safe, efficient, compassionate, and high-quality care.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesClinical Care
- Perform comprehensive and focused medical histories and physical examinations.
- Provide primary care services to infants, children, adolescents, and adults according to the practice's scope of services and the APRN's qualifications.
- Evaluate and manage common acute illnesses and injuries.
- Diagnose and manage chronic medical conditions within scope of practice.
- Develop individualized treatment and follow-up plans.
- Order and interpret appropriate laboratory tests, diagnostic studies, and other clinical evaluations.
- Prescribe medications and treatments in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, clinical privileges, and practice policies.
- Perform authorized office-based procedures within training and competency.
- Identify patients requiring a higher level of care and arrange appropriate referral or transfer.
- Coordinate referrals to specialists and other healthcare professionals when clinically indicated.
- Provide appropriate follow-up after laboratory results, diagnostic testing, specialist evaluations, emergency department visits, and hospitalizations.
Pediatric Care
- Conduct newborn, infant, child, and adolescent examinations as appropriate to the practice.
- Perform well-child visits and age-appropriate preventive assessments.
- Monitor growth and development.
- Provide anticipatory guidance to parents and caregivers.
- Evaluate common pediatric illnesses and conditions.
- Review immunization histories and recommend vaccines according to current guidelines and practice protocols.
- Identify developmental, behavioral, nutritional, and other pediatric concerns and initiate appropriate referrals when necessary.
- Educate parents and caregivers regarding medications, treatment plans, warning signs, and follow-up care.
Adult & Family Medicine
- Conduct annual physical examinations and preventive healthcare visits.
- Provide screening and counseling based on patient age, history, and risk factors.
- Evaluate and manage common adult acute conditions.
- Manage chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, asthma, and other conditions appropriate to primary care and the APRN's scope of practice.
- Promote healthy lifestyle practices, including appropriate nutrition, exercise, weight management, smoking cessation, and preventive healthcare.
Patient Education
- Explain diagnoses, treatment options, medications, testing, and follow-up recommendations in understandable language.
- Educate patients and families regarding disease prevention and management.
- Encourage adherence to treatment plans and recommended preventive services.
- Provide culturally sensitive, respectful, and family-centered care.
Documentation & Compliance
- Complete accurate and timely documentation in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
- Document medical necessity, assessment, treatment plans, prescriptions, patient education, and follow-up instructions appropriately.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA requirements.
- Follow applicable federal and state healthcare regulations and professional standards.
- Follow infection-control, medication-management, patient-safety, and quality-assurance policies.
- Participate in quality improvement, chart review, clinical audits, and staff education when requested.
- Maintain required licenses, certifications, continuing education, and credentialing documentation.
Collaboration & Practice Operations
- Collaborate effectively with physicians and other clinical staff.
- Communicate abnormal or urgent findings appropriately.
- Participate in development and implementation of clinical protocols when requested.
- Provide clinical guidance to nursing and medical-assistant staff within appropriate professional boundaries.
- Assist with continuity and coordination of patient care.
- Promote efficient patient flow while maintaining appropriate standards of care.
- Participate in staff meetings and clinical quality initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications
- Current and unrestricted Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) license in the state of practice.
- Graduate degree from an accredited nurse practitioner program.
- Current national board certification appropriate to the patient population served, such as Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) or another applicable certification.
- Current BLS certification.
- Current DEA registration when required for assigned prescribing responsibilities.
- Meets all applicable credentialing and payer-enrollment requirements.
- Experience in pediatrics, family medicine, or primary care preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong pediatric and adult clinical assessment skills.
- Knowledge of preventive and primary healthcare.
- Ability to recognize medical emergencies and initiate appropriate intervention.
- Effective communication with children, parents, caregivers, and adult patients.
- Strong clinical judgment and decision-making skills.
- Ability to work independently within authorized scope while collaborating appropriately with the healthcare team.
- Strong organizational and documentation skills.
- Familiarity with electronic medical records.
- Commitment to patient safety, confidentiality, professionalism, and quality care.
Physical Requirements
The APRN must be able to perform the physical activities reasonably necessary for outpatient clinical practice, including standing, walking, examining patients, using medical equipment, and responding appropriately to urgent clinical situations, with reasonable accommodations when applicable.
