Job Title: Mobile Heavy Equipment Mechanic

Job Summary
The Mobile Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining construction equipment and commercial vehicles used in earthwork and utility operations. This role ensures all machinery and fleet assets operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company and regulatory standards. The ideal candidate has strong mechanical skills, experience with diesel engines and hydraulic systems, and the ability to troubleshoot complex equipment issues.
Key Responsibilities
- Inspect, diagnose, and repair heavy construction equipment such as excavators, loaders, dozers, graders, and compactors
- Maintain and repair heavy fleet vehicles including dump trucks, flatbeds, and service trucks
- Perform routine preventive maintenance (PMs) such as oil changes, filter replacements, and lubrication
- Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and diesel engine issues
- Knowledge of DOT regulations and ensure fleet compliance
- Repair and replace components such as brakes, transmissions, engines, and hydraulic systems
- Maintain accurate service records, repair logs, and inspection reports
- Respond to field service calls and perform on-site repairs when necessary
- Keep tools, equipment, and shop areas clean and organized
- Follow all safety procedures and company policies
- ASE certification or equivalent heavy equipment certifications
- Experience with diagnostic software and electronic control systems
- Welding and fabrication skills preferred
- Experience with GPS and machine control systems
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent (required); technical school or certifications preferred
- 3+ years of experience as a mechanic working on heavy equipment and/or diesel trucks
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and mechanical components
- Ability to diagnose and repair complex equipment issues independently
- Valid driver’s license (CDL with hazmat and tanker endorsements a plus or willingness to obtain)
- Ability to work flexible hours, including overtime and emergency repairs
Work Environment
- Shop and field-based work, including construction sites
- Exposure to noise, grease, dust, and heavy equipment
- Work in varying weather conditions when performing field repairs
- May require overtime, weekend work, or emergency service calls
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift, carry, and handle heavy parts and tools (50+ lbs.)
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and work in tight or awkward positions
- Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for tool use
- Ability to climb onto and under heavy equipment safely
