Eco & Associates, Inc. is seeking four (4) dedicated and detail-oriented Cultural Resource Monitors to join our team and help ensure the protection and preservation of archaeological and cultural sites during construction and development projects. This vital role involves conducting field research, monitoring construction activities, and ensuring compliance with environmental permitting regulations. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical skills, experience in managing archaeological survey teams, and a passion for cultural heritage preservation. As a Cultural Resource Monitor, you will play a key role in balancing development needs with the safeguarding of cultural resources, contributing to sustainable project outcomes.
Work Conditions & Expectations
- 95% fieldwork — candidates must be physically capable of navigating rugged terrain and working outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
- Must be willing and able to travel to remote, out-of-state locations and work in field conditions with limited amenities.
- Schedule typically requires 10-hour days, depending on project demands and construction schedules.
Duties
● Possess regional expertise to identify sensitive archaeological resources
● Conduct archaeological surveys and establish avoidance buffers
● Monitor Best Management Practices (BMP) measures and their implementation
● Document field observations and photograph findings
● Host environmental awareness training at pre-construction sites for new construction crew staff, as needed
● Support minor relocation activities of resources as directed by CBP Environmental Project Staff
● Survey project areas, laydown yards, and access roads ahead of construction, as directed by CBP Environmental project staff
Prepare and submit daily Cultural Resource Monitoring Reports to CBP and the on-site CBP Construction Site Manager, documenting BMP compliance, identifying and resolving ongoing issues, and photographing observations.
○ Reports must be brief, include monitoring coordinates, and exclude culturally sensitive information
○ Reports are due at the end of each working day
Skills
- Proven experience in field archaeological survey methods, and data collection techniques.
- Strong proficiency with GIS software such as ArcGIS and GPS surveying tools for mapping and spatial analysis.
- Laboratory experience is advantageous for artifact handling and analysis.
- Excellent analysis skills to interpret field data within environmental compliance frameworks.
- Supervising experience managing archaeological survey teams in dynamic field environments.
- Knowledge of environmental permitting processes related to construction projects involving cultural resources.
- Ability to perform detailed report writing, technical documentation, and research synthesis.
- Construction experience is beneficial for understanding project workflows and safety protocols.
- Familiarity with cultural resource assessments, environmental compliance standards, and related regulations.
Qualifications
- Education: B.A. or B.S. in Archaeology or a related field required; master’s degree preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of two years of project experience in archaeology and/or cultural resources. Preference given to candidates with experience supporting Government projects in the Southwest border region.
