Position: Kitchen Assistant/Cook
Schedule: Part Time; 15-25 hours each week; Wed thru Sunday; hours may vary based on volunteer groups and will typically be 8am to 1pm or 2pm to 5pm (schedule may be adjusted as needed)

Job Overview
This cook will assist in preparing and distributing meals completed at the Skagit Friendship House Café and served to shelter residents, the public, and packaged for transport to the Skagit First Step Center (SFSC) residents in Burlington. This part time job would be perfect for a cook seeking lighter duty or someone interested in learning how to cook in an institutional setting. The cook will work side by side with the Café Kitchen Manager, lead chef, shelter residents, donors, and volunteers. Not only will the cook be trained in a variety of duties involved in the operations of a café, but this position is an excellent opportunity to support our mission and provide guidance, empathy, support, and kindness to marginalized individuals and families in Skagit County.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Prepare evening and SFSC meals with assistance from the shelter residents on duty
- Trained to process fresh produce donations
- Trained to process fresh fish, beef, game, and offal
- Trained to finish smoked meats using a café outdoor grill
- Help volunteers and donors’ unload meals and food donations
- The assistant cook will receive inventory & stock donations
- Document and manage purchased food and supply receipts and process in-kind forms
- Provide positive support and guidance as residents perform café chores
- Pack dinners into Cambro containers for the SFSC shelter and added destinations
- Package and prepare sack lunches for distribution
- When assigned, cook will be the PIC when the Café Kitchen Manager is away
- Perform crisis intervention; recognize those on the trespass list and ensure they leave the premises
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Excellent communication skills: The assistant cook interacts with many people, including the café kitchen manager, lead chef, shelter residents, maintenance & repair vendors, volunteers, and donors. It is important to be a strong and detailed communicator for the meal service to run smoothly.
- Solid attention to detail: The café is a high-volume and fast-paced environment. For the Skagit Friendship House Café, it is important the assistant cook can multitask, perform well under pressure, and pay close attention to the details of their work and others on the line.
- Flexibility: Assistant cooks, once trained, can be expected to perform different tasks depending on the needs for that day. If the Café is very busy, for example, you may be expected to lead the completion of the main meal to help the Chef accommodate all orders for that specific meal or extended hours.
- Experience: Two years of restaurant experience is preferred, but not required.
- Education: At a minimum, having earned a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Certification: Food Handler Card, CPR & First Aid. These are preferred but can be earned once hired.
- Must be able to lift 50lbs
- Bilingual: Is preferred and helpful but not required
Pay:
- Pay: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour depending on experience
