Physical Therapist (PT) – School-BasedPosition Summary
We are seeking a compassionate and dependable Physical Therapist (PT) to provide school-based physical therapy services to students within a school system. The Physical Therapist will support students in accessing and participating in their educational environment by addressing mobility, gross motor skills, positioning, balance, coordination, and functional movement needs.
The PT will work collaboratively with teachers, special education staff, related service providers, administrators, families, and other members of the educational team to support student success and ensure services are provided in accordance with each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP).
Essential Responsibilities
- Provide physical therapy evaluations, assessments, and treatment services to students as determined by educational need and IEP requirements.
- Develop and implement appropriate therapeutic interventions to address students' functional mobility, gross motor, balance, strength, coordination, positioning, and access needs.
- Provide direct and/or consultative physical therapy services in accordance with student IEPs.
- Participate in IEP meetings and contribute appropriate evaluation results, goals, accommodations, recommendations, and progress information.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of evaluations, treatment sessions, progress notes, and other required records.
- Monitor student progress and communicate recommendations and concerns to the educational team.
- Collaborate with teachers and school staff to integrate therapeutic strategies into the student's school environment.
- Provide staff and caregiver education regarding positioning, mobility, transfers, equipment, and strategies that support student participation and safety.
- Recommend and assist with appropriate adaptive equipment, mobility devices, positioning systems, and environmental modifications when needed.
- Support students' safe access to classrooms, school activities, playgrounds, transportation, and other educational environments.
- Follow district policies, procedures, confidentiality requirements, and applicable federal and state regulations.
- Complete required documentation and services within established school and IEP timelines.
- Communicate professionally and consistently with school administrators, staff, families, and other related service providers.
- Participate in multidisciplinary collaboration with occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, teachers, nurses, and special education professionals.
- Maintain professional competence and follow applicable Physical Therapy practice standards.
Qualifications
- Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) or appropriate physical therapy degree from an accredited program.
- Current state Physical Therapist license in good standing.
- Experience working with children is preferred.
- School-based experience is preferred but not required.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary educational team.
- Strong written, verbal, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to manage documentation and meet IEP and school-system deadlines.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining effective communication with school staff and the supervising/administrative team.
School-Based Expectations
The Physical Therapist should understand that school-based therapy focuses on helping students access and participate in their educational environment. Services should be provided in a manner that supports the student's educational goals and functional needs within the school setting.
The PT is expected to:
- Provide services according to the student's IEP.
- Meet required service timelines and documentation deadlines.
- Maintain professional communication with school personnel.
- Respect student confidentiality and privacy.
- Follow school safety procedures and district policies.
- Collaborate with the educational team to promote student independence and participation.
- Communicate promptly regarding scheduling concerns, student needs, absences, or changes that may affect service delivery.
Technology & Documentation
The Physical Therapist must be comfortable learning and using school-specific documentation and communication systems. Training and orientation will be provided on applicable school platforms and procedures.
