SALARY RATE: $36,400.00 (Annual Salary) based on the FTE
JOB DUTIES: The Referral Coordinator serves as a vital member of the care team by coordinating referrals for specialty care, mental health services, diagnostic testing, and ancillary services. This position ensures patients receive timely access to appropriate services while maintaining continuity of care through effective communication with providers, patients, specialists, and insurance payers. This position supports the intake, triage, assessment, care coordination, outreach, resource navigation, crisis intervention support, and ongoing follow-up services for mental health services. The Referral Coordinator plays an essential role in overcoming barriers to care by assisting patients with scheduling, transportation considerations, insurance authorization, and follow-up to ensure referrals are completed.
THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS ARE: Applicants must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated; the required education and experiences may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are based on a 40-hour work week.
Education:
High school diploma or GED required. Associate degree or healthcare-related coursework preferred.
Experience:
Minimum of two years of experience in a medical office, clinic, hospital, or healthcare setting. Experience coordinating referrals, insurance authorizations, or patient scheduling preferred. Experience working in primary care, rural health, community health centers, or specialty practices preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of medical terminology. Understanding of referral workflows and insurance authorization processes. Familiarity with Medicare, Medicaid, commercial insurance, and managed care plans. Strong organizational and time management skills. Excellent customer service and communication skills. Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) and Microsoft Office applications. Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times. Demonstrated cultural sensitivity and ability to work effectively with diverse patient populations.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with population health management or care coordination. Knowledge of community resources and transportation services available in rural areas.
Physical Requirements:
Frequent sitting, standing, walking, and computer use. Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds.Manual dexterity sufficient for keyboarding and office equipment operation.
Work Environment:
This position is performed primarily in a clinical office or home office environment. The Referral Coordinator interacts regularly with patients, providers, specialists, insurance representatives, and community partners while maintaining a professional, patient-centered approach.

If you do not submit your request within the twenty (20) days deadline, no Administrative Review will be conducted. Since the Administrative Review is a prerequisite to subsequent steps, failure to utilize this process will make you ineligible for subsequent appeals. The administrative review, formal complaint and/or appeals hearing will not necessarily postpone the recruitment process and/or rescind a selection. If you do not agree with the Administrative Review, you may file a Formal Compliant and then, if you are still not satisfied, you can appeal to the HHSC Merit Appeals Board.
