Role Overview:
Looking for a Unity Developer to join a small, fast-moving team building simulation applications. You would own meaningful portions of software development (e.g., from feature work through production deployments) in environments with infrastructure and compliance constraints. This role suits a strong software engineer who is comfortable in new technical territory, moves fast without cutting corners, and has the instincts to make decisions today that don't create problems down the road. Hours per week is currently at 40 but it should be part-time support over time (20 hours per week).
2. Tasks and Duties of the Role:
Develop, maintain, and extend Unity applications targeting vehicle simulation contexts
Integrate applications with distributed messaging systems, including DIS (Distributed Interactive Simulation) and ROS2
Participate in and maintain CI/CD pipelines, including automated build, test, and deployment workflows
Refactor and improve production codebases, including under deployment pressure and time constraints
Contribute to testing strategy and uphold code quality standards appropriate for mission-relevant applications
Identify and flag development decisions that could create downstream compliance issues in managed or accreditation-sensitive network environments (e.g., ATO)
Collaborate with a small cross-functional team, taking ownership of tasks from scoping through delivery
3. Required Skills
Proficient Unity development, with shipped or production-deployed applications
Strong software engineering fundamentals: clean architecture, test discipline, and readable code
Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines and production deployment workflows
Demonstrated experience refactoring existing codebases, including in fast-moving or high-pressure situations
Ability to work effectively in a startup or similarly resource-constrained, ambiguous environment
Communication skills sufficient to surface technical risks early and collaborate without heavy process
4. Preferred Skills
Prior exposure to XR development
Familiarity with DIS or ROS2 messaging protocols, or other domain-specific real-time messaging systems
Awareness of network and infrastructure constraints in managed, regulated, or classified environments
Experience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) or infrastructure-as-code tooling
Background in vehicle simulation, physics-based environments, or defense/research applications
5. Minimum years of relevant experience
3+ years of professional software development experience
2+ years working with Unity in a production context
6. Required Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field — or equivalent demonstrated experience
7. Preferred Certifications:
Unity Certified Professional: Programmer
Relevant cloud or DevOps certifications (AWS, Azure, GCP, or equivalent) supporting CI/CD and deployment work
CompTIA Security+ or equivalent, for candidates expected to operate in accreditation-sensitive environments
