The personal care attendant provides direct resident care under the supervision of a licensed nurse. Assist residents with activities of daily living, housekeeping, laundry, and other daily chores. Position may involve assisting residents with medication administration.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide the following homemaker and personal care responsibilities to residents, under the direction of a licensed nurse, in order to maintain health and independence of resident:
- Showers/bathing
- Personal hygiene including: skin care, nail care, oral care
- Dressing/grooming
- Performs housekeeping duties as needed: cleans resident rooms, empties trash, strip and launder resident beds
- Do personal laundry for residents
- Responds to resident concerns regarding safety, medical and emotional well-being and reports any concerns to nurse.
- Maintains resident’s privacy and dignity, and respects the resident’s right to confidentiality.
- Prepares residents for meals, serves food trays to residents and assists with feeding when necessary. Makes sure residents are clean after completing their meal.
- Prepares and transports residents to activities and appointments and other functions as needed.
- Checks all assigned residents on rounds to determine if they have any needs or if there is any cause for concern regarding present status.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
- Observes and practices Infection Control and Standard Precautions in accordance with St. Mary’s Villa Campus standards.
- Utilizes equipment in a safe and appropriate manner as designated by facility policy. Observes and promptly reports equipment safety hazards or defective/malfunctioning equipment or supplies.
- Demonstrates good body mechanics when performing care.
- Demonstrates knowledge of fire drill and all other emergency preparedness plans.
- Demonstrates knowledge about the Material Safety Data Sheets book.
- Attends mandatory inservices and other inservices in order to update and enhance present knowledge and skills.

Qualifications:
Education: High School Diploma or its equivalency preferred.
Experience: Previous experience in assisted living is preferred but not necessary. Workers receive on-the-job training under close supervision. Must be at least 18 years of age.
Job knowledge: Knowledge of OSHA-MSDS sheets and procedures. Possess knowledge of fire and safety procedures and have the ability to operate basic kitchen appliances and office equipment.
Working Conditions:
Assisted living environment; direct contact with residents and families; job involves being on one’s feet most of the work shift; ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs; frequent pushing, pulling, stooping and reaching; exposure to blood and body fluids; ability to safely move/lift residents; exposure to information which must remain confidential. Must possess good awareness of proper body mechanics, as well as visual and hearing acuity to detect changes in resident. May encounter stressful situations in which resident is not cooperating. May also be faced with the challenge of handling extra residents, due to the absence of co-workers.
Special Demands:
Position is a critical front line role that requires great communication, customer service, and organizational skills. Must have a genuine interest in geriatric nursing. Willingness to work with the realization that errors may have serious consequences for residents. Realizes that working extra shifts is oftentimes required, due to nature of position. Also realizes that facility operates 24 hours/day, 7 days/week, 365 days/year., which means that services are always required, despite inclement weather. Understands the nature of work involved and realizes that population has certain immediate and special needs. Willingness to perform routine, repetitive tasks on a continuous basis and perform tasks despite frequent interruptions.
