The Theater Director reports directly to the Head of School and works with teachers and students in Fifth through Eighth Grade. This position is responsible for three productions a year: 2 plays and a musical. The Theater Director works with teachers and staff to select the productions, cast, rehearse, stage, and and developing lesson plans; delivering group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines; collaborating with other teachers, staff, and administrators in addressing instructional and/or classroom issues; supervising students within the classroom and other assigned areas; and responding to inquiries from students’ parents or guardians regarding student progress and the instructional program, among other related responsibilities.
The Theater Director will seek to model the school’s philosophy of education through instruction and example, and provide lessons that meet the school’s requirements as well as students’ interests and capabilities. The Theater Director will take precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities, and keep accurate records.
Develop a pre-production practice and rehearsal plan. Communicate with faculty and parents regarding the plan
Attend staff meetings and generally participate in the life of the school
Create a curriculum and/or implement the school’s curriculum within the structure of theater and theater performance
Assist, as needed, with Coffee Houses and graduation
Plan and direct annual Upper School musical and plays for grades 5-8
Maintain the theater and costume attic in a clean, attractive, and functional manner
Purchase equipment as needed for the theater program and work directly with the Business Manager
Create a developmentally appropriate, positive, and inclusive culture that cultivates motivation and enthusiasm for and growth in learning
Collaborate with faculty and staff
Handle social, emotional, and behavioral issues as they arise, inform primary teachers, and communicate with parents
Work to be an example of and promote healthy interpersonal relationships with coworkers and students
Report safety and wellness incidents to maintain students’ personal safety and adhere to state law
Other duties appropriately assigned by Head of School
Bachelor’s degree in theater education or similar
Proficient knowledge of teaching strategies and methods
At least 3 to 5 years of experience in a school or youth-serving organization
Outstanding organizational skills
Proficient computer skills
Availability to work extended hours in preparation for theater productions
Able to work well collaboratively
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Detail-oriented
High-energy and enthusiastic about working in an academic atmosphere
