Lawton Academy of Performing Arts is looking for an enthusiastic, reliable singing teacher / vocal coach to teach private voice lessons to students ages 5–18 (beginner through advanced). The ideal candidate is great with kids and teens, can build confidence quickly, and can also support students with music literacy, sight-reading, and NYSSMA preparation.
This is a part-time role with lesson times coordinated around student demand and instructor availability.
Responsibilities
- Teach private voice lessons for ages 5–18 (all experience levels)
- Provide age-appropriate instruction in:
- Vocal technique, breath support, tone, range, pitch accuracy
- Healthy vocal habits and vocal safety
- Performance skills and audition prep (as needed)
- Help students develop music reading skills (sight-reading basics, rhythm, pitch, solfege/intervals helpful)
- Support students with NYSSMA preparation (New York State School Music Association), including repertoire selection, coaching, sight-reading support, and mock adjudications as needed
- Communicate clearly with families about progress and practice goals
- Potentially assist with our musical theatre productions (as needed), such as:
- Vocal coaching for cast members
- Supporting rehearsal preparation and song learning
Qualifications
- Experience teaching voice to children/teens (private studio, school, theatre program, etc.)
- Strong piano/keyboard ability preferred (for teaching and accompanying warmups/songs)
- Knowledge of fundamentals of music theory and sight-reading instruction
- Familiarity with NYSSMA requirements and repertoire is a plus (or willingness to learn)
- Dependable, professional, and warm with students and parents
- Ability to pass any required background checks (if applicable)
Required Commute / Local Requirement
Because this is an in-person position and scheduling reliability matters, we can only consider applicants who live within 10 miles of Glen Head, NY.
Please do not apply if you are based in Brooklyn or Queens (the commute is not a fit for this role).
