Duties
- Safely operate school buses and paratransit vehicles, ensuring adherence to all traffic laws, vehicle codes, and emergency response procedures for transportation.
- Transport preschool children to and from school, daycare, field trips, and special events with punctuality and care.
- Conduct pre-trip inspections of vehicles to ensure mechanical safety, including checking brakes, lights, tires, and emergency equipment.
- Follow school policy guidelines for behavior management, child safety protocols, and communication with parents or guardians.
- Respond quickly and appropriately to traffic changes or emergencies, including emergency stop procedures and first aid situations such as CPR when necessary.
- Maintain accurate logs of routes, mileage, fuel consumption, and incident reports while ensuring confidentiality of student information.
- Communicate effectively with school staff, parents, children, and colleagues to provide excellent customer service and foster positive relationships.
Qualifications
- Valid driver’s license
- Proven experience in bus driving or commercial driving roles; prior school bus driving experience is highly preferred.
- Knowledge of traffic laws, vehicle codes, defensive driving techniques, and emergency response procedures for transportation.
- Certification in first aid and CPR; ability to respond swiftly in emergency situations involving children or vehicle incidents.
- Strong communication skills in English; bilingual abilities are a plus for working with diverse communities.
- Mechanical knowledge of vehicle maintenance basics; ability to perform routine inspections and minor repairs.
- Experience working with children or in childcare settings; patience, behavior management skills, and a caring attitude are essential.
- Ability to lift heavy objects safely when necessary for vehicle checks or loading/unloading equipment.
- Familiarity with school policies related to transportation safety and student conduct; commitment to maintaining a safe environment for all passengers.
