Family Advocate – Head Start Program
The Sheboygan Human Rights Association is seeking a compassionate and organized Family Advocate to support Head Start families in achieving their educational, health, nutrition, and social service goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct monthly/bi-monthly family visits and develop family goal plans.
- Connect families with community resources and support services.
- Provide parent education and advocacy related to health, education, employment, and family well-being.
- Maintain accurate case files and documentation in Child Plus.
- Assist with child recruitment, family engagement activities, and parent meetings.
- Collaborate with teaching staff, health professionals, and community agencies.
- Support families in obtaining health, dental, and other required services.
- Makes referrals to appropriate Managers/Area Specialists and/or agencies of concerns expressed by the family, such as (but not limited to): Insurance/Managed Care, WIC/Food Stamps, legal assistance, child support, special needs/mental health concerns, educational concerns, and health concerns.
- Comply with Wisconsin Statutes, Children’s Code, and Head Start Personnel Policies in suspected cases of child abuse & neglect and records in a bound medical log and file.
- Performs any other related duties as assigned.
- Assists in the classroom as needed; ongoing communication with teaching staff.
- Provides childcare for council and parent meetings.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required. Preferably in human services or a related field.
- Bachelor's degree in human services, Social Work, Family Services, Counseling, Psychology, Sociology, or a related field preferred.
- Candidates with a current credential or certification in Human Services, Family Services, Social Work, Counseling, or a related field are encouraged to apply.
- Applicants without these qualifications may be considered if they are willing and able to obtain an approved credential or certification within 18 months of hire in accordance with Head Start Performance Standards
- Experience working with families, community resources, or social services.
- Strong communication, interviewing, documentation, and organizational skills.
- Positive attitude with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle, and automobile insurance required.
- Commitment to empowering low-income families and supporting the Head Start mission.
Additional Requirements:
- Ability to maintain accurate records and meet reporting deadlines.
- Occasional evening or irregular hours.
- Frequent travel for home visits.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and participate in activities involving children.
- Fingerprinting, background check, physical, Mantoux tuberculin (TB) test, and drug screening will be required.

Pay: $16.14 - $21.77 per hour
Expected hours: 40.0 per week
