After-School Music Teacher (Part-Time)

The Advent School is seeking an enthusiastic, creative, and passionate After-School Music Teacher to lead engaging music enrichment classes for students in Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 6 during the 2026–2027 academic year.
This is an exciting opportunity for a music educator who enjoys inspiring young children through singing, movement, rhythm, instrument exploration, and creative expression. The successful candidate will design developmentally appropriate, hands-on music experiences that foster confidence, collaboration, and a lifelong appreciation for music in a joyful after-school environment.
Position Details
- Position Type: Part-Time
- Compensation: $25 to $30 per hour
- Location: The Advent School, Boston, MA
- Duration: September 2026 through June 2027
Preferred Availability:
- Monday–Thursday: 3:00 p.m. – 5:15 p.m.
- Friday: 12:00 p.m. – 5:15 p.m.
While candidates with broader availability are preferred, we welcome applications from instructors who can commit to teaching one or more days per week.
Responsibilities
Music Instruction
- Lead engaging, hands-on music focus classes for students in Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 6.
- Teach foundational music concepts including rhythm, melody, harmony, tempo, dynamics, form, and musical expression.
- Foster students' creativity and confidence through singing, movement, rhythm games, improvisation, and collaborative music-making.
- Introduce students to a variety of musical genres, cultures, and traditions.
- Adapt instruction to meet the developmental needs, interests, and skill levels of diverse learners.
Instrument Exploration
- Introduce students to age-appropriate instruments such as percussion, rhythm instruments, xylophones, ukuleles, recorders, keyboards, or other classroom instruments.
- Teach proper instrument care and basic performance techniques.
- Encourage students to explore music through experimentation, composition, and ensemble performance.
Curriculum and Lesson Planning
- Design creative, developmentally appropriate music lessons and activities.
- Create engaging experiences that balance musical skill development with joyful exploration.
- Incorporate games, movement, storytelling, and project-based learning into instruction.
Classroom Management
- Create a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.
- Establish clear expectations and effectively manage student behavior using positive reinforcement.
- Foster collaboration, teamwork, respect, and confidence among students.
- Maintain high levels of student engagement throughout after-school programming.
Safety and Program Support
- Ensure student safety during classes, transitions, dismissal, and outdoor movement as needed.
- Maintain an organized and welcoming classroom environment.
- Manage classroom materials, musical instruments, and supplies.
- Collaborate with program staff to support the overall success of the After-School Enrichment Program.
Professionalism and Communication
- Build positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
- Communicate professionally with families regarding student participation and special performances.
- Collaborate with program coordinators regarding scheduling, attendance, and classroom needs.
- Demonstrate professionalism in all interactions and follow all school policies related to student safety and supervision.
Qualifications
- Commitment to teaching throughout the 2026–2027 academic year.
- Experience teaching music to young children in schools, camps, after-school programs, community organizations, or private instruction.
- Degree or coursework in Music, Music Education, Early Childhood Education, or a related field is preferred.
- Proficiency in one or more musical areas such as voice, piano, guitar, ukulele, percussion, or general music instruction.
- Experience working with children in Pre-Kindergarten through elementary school.
- Strong classroom management and relationship-building skills.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and collaboration skills.
- Enthusiastic, dependable, creative, and student-centered.
- Passion for music education and helping children discover the joy of making music.
