Position: Accounting Manager
Location: Hilliard, OH — On-Site
Company: Unwin Company
Job Summary
Unwin Company, a government contractor, is seeking an experienced Accounting Manager to join our small, collaborative accounting team.
This is a full-time, on-site position in Hilliard, Ohio. This role is not remote or hybrid. Because of the collaborative nature of our accounting department, the emphasis on cross-training, and the need to work directly with accounting records, employees, and other departments, we are looking for someone who wants to be physically present and actively engaged with the team.
While the title is Accounting Manager, this role is not primarily focused on managing people. Instead, we are looking for an experienced accounting professional who can work independently, think analytically, cross-train across multiple accounting functions, and step in wherever needed to keep the department operating effectively.
The ideal candidate is someone who can move comfortably between financial analysis, reconciliations, project accounting, reporting, process improvement, and everyday accounting tasks. No task is considered beneath the position—whether that means analyzing a complex accounting issue, troubleshooting a system problem, reviewing an expense report, helping another team member, or scanning documents when that is what needs to be done.
We value people who take ownership, ask good questions, look for better ways to accomplish the work, and are willing to learn all aspects of the department.
Key Responsibilities
· Support financial reporting, account reconciliations, and month-end close activities
· Reconcile and analyze general ledger, cost accounting, and project accounting records
· Review financial information for accuracy, identify trends or unusual activity, and investigate discrepancies
· Assist with project accounting and accounting requirements associated with government contracts
· Cross-train in multiple accounting functions to provide redundancy and support throughout the department
· Serve as a resource to other members of the accounting team and provide backup coverage as needed
· Analyze existing accounting processes and recommend practical improvements
· Support the continued transition from paper-based processes to electronic accounting records
· Work with electronic timekeeping, expense reporting, and other accounting systems
· Troubleshoot accounting and system-related issues and work through problems to resolution
· Prepare and run financial and operational reports, including COGNOS reports
· Support audits, compliance requirements, and accurate and timely reporting
· Work collaboratively with other departments to support project execution, client requirements, and compliance with applicable federal regulations
· Assist with routine accounting and administrative responsibilities when needed to ensure the work gets completed accurately and on time
Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
· 5+ years of progressively responsible accounting experience
· Strong experience with financial reporting, general ledger accounting, reconciliations, and month-end close
· Experience working within a robust ERP or accounting system; experience should extend beyond basic small-business accounting software such as QuickBooks
· Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to investigate discrepancies and understand the underlying cause of an issue
· Ability and willingness to learn multiple accounting functions and provide backup support across the department
· Comfortable working in a small-team environment where responsibilities may vary from day to day
· Strong attention to detail and a willingness to take ownership of tasks through completion
· Ability to learn new systems and processes and adapt as organizational needs change
· Strong written and verbal communication skills
· A practical, team-oriented mindset and willingness to handle both complex and routine work as needed
· Ability and willingness to work on-site in our Hilliard, Ohio office on a full-time basis
Preferred Qualifications
· CPA or CMA certification
· Experience in a government contracting environment
· Experience with project accounting
· Familiarity with Deltek Costpoint, COGNOS, or similar ERP/reporting systems
· Experience with electronic timekeeping and expense reporting systems
Why Join Us?
At Unwin Company, you will be part of a small accounting team where your work has a direct impact on the organization.
Our accounting department emphasizes cross-training and redundancy rather than narrow specialization, allowing team members to understand multiple areas of the business and provide coverage for one another. We believe this creates a stronger department while also supporting a healthy work-life balance.
This position offers an opportunity to work across a wide range of accounting responsibilities rather than being limited to one narrow function. You will have the ability to analyze problems, improve processes, learn new areas, and contribute directly to how the department operates.
We also believe that seniority does not eliminate responsibility for the everyday work of the department. Everyone contributes where needed, whether the task involves financial analysis, resolving an accounting issue, supporting an audit, reviewing transactions, assisting another team member, or handling routine administrative work.
This is an in-office position, and we are specifically looking for someone who values being part of an on-site team. The position is not designed for remote or hybrid work.
Our expectation is that normal responsibilities can be completed during regular business hours. The position does not require routine overtime or travel.
If you are an experienced accountant who enjoys variety, thinks analytically, takes ownership of problems, values collaboration and cross-training, and is willing to do what is necessary to get the job done, we would like to hear from you.
