About Buttermilk Bakeshop
Buttermilk Bakeshop is a busy neighborhood bakery with two Park Slope locations. We specialize in custom cakes, celebration cakes, cupcakes, cookies, pies, and pastries made with creativity and care.
We are seeking an experienced cake decorator who is also highly organized, dependable, and comfortable serving as a hands-on operational lead. This is not a desk or administrative position. The right candidate will spend most of the week actively decorating, assisting with production, supporting customers, and helping both bakery locations remain organized and consistent.
This position is ideal for an experienced decorator who enjoys variety, takes ownership of their work, and is comfortable helping a busy bakery stay on track.
Primary Responsibilities Cake Decorating and Production
- Build, fill, crumb-coat, ice, and finish cakes from start to finish
- Produce high-volume case cakes efficiently and consistently
- Complete approximately 30–40 straightforward case cakes per day when assigned to case-cake production
- Execute basic fondant work and apply fondant cleanly
- Decorate custom and tiered cakes according to order specifications
- Prepare buttercream, fillings, and other decorating components
- Review cake orders for accuracy, missing information, and production needs
- Check completed orders for quality, accuracy, stability, and presentation
- Assist with basic bakery production, including cookies and other items, when coverage is needed
- Pack and quality-check Goldbelly and other shipping orders
- Maintain a clean, sanitary, and organized workstation
Store and Operations Support
- Work at either of our Park Slope locations based on daily business needs
- Serve as a reliable point person during busy shifts, particularly at our Fifth Avenue store
- Help keep orders, pickups, production, and customer service running smoothly
- Reinforce established bakery policies, procedures, and quality standards
- Help ensure opening, closing, cleaning, stocking, and order-handling procedures are followed consistently
- Answer employees’ routine operational questions and help resolve immediate workflow issues
- Train team members on established procedures and demonstrate the correct way to complete tasks
- Help organize the day’s work and redirect immediate tasks when priorities change
- Communicate operational, staffing, quality, or performance concerns to the owners
- Monitor product and supply levels and communicate inventory needs
- Help maintain consistent procedures and standards across both bakery locations
- Open or close a store when scheduled
Customer Service and Administrative Support
- Assist customers in person and over the phone
- Take orders and explain standard products, serving sizes, flavors, designs, and pricing
- Work the register and assist with order pickups and handoffs
- Respond to routine customer emails using established bakery policies and pricing
- Handle routine customer concerns professionally and escalate unusual requests or problems to the owners
- Provide friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient service during busy periods
Pay: $25.00 - $29.00 per hour
