Position Summary
The Oncology Pharmacist serves as the clinical and operational gatekeeper for all medication-related processes within the oncology practice. This role is responsible for the safe preparation, verification, and management of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and supportive care medications, ensuring compliance with all applicable federal and California regulations. This position collaborates closely with physicians, nurse practitioners, and nursing staff to optimize patient outcomes and maintain the highest standards of safety and regulatory compliance.
Clinical Oversight
· Review and verify all chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and supportive care medication orders
· Assess dosing (BSA, renal/hepatic adjustments), drug interactions, and protocol adherence
· Evaluate patient-specific factors including lab values, allergies, and performance status
· Provide clinical recommendations to providers regarding therapy optimization
Medication Preparation & Safety
· Oversee or perform sterile compounding in compliance with USP <797> and <800>
· Ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous drugs
· Maintain compliance with California Board of Pharmacy regulations
· Develop and enforce medication safety protocols
Regulatory Compliance
· Ensure adherence to California Board of Pharmacy, OSHA, and USP standards
· Maintain documentation for audits, inspections, and accreditation readiness
· Participate in quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives
Operations & Workflow
· Coordinate with clinical staff on infusion scheduling and medication availability
· Assist with inventory management and cost containment strategies
· Implement standardized treatment protocols and order sets
Education & Communication
· Educate clinical staff on medication protocols and safety
· Counsel patients as appropriate
· Serve as a clinical resource for providers and staff
Qualifications - Required
· Active and unrestricted California Pharmacist License
· Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD)
· 2–3 years pharmacist experience and at least 1 year oncology experience
Qualifications - Preferred
· 3–5+ years oncology pharmacy experience
· Outpatient infusion or community oncology experience
· Board Certification in Oncology Pharmacy (BCOP)
· Experience with EMR systems and oncology protocols
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
· Ability to stand for extended periods
· Ability to handle hazardous medications using appropriate PPE
· Work in a clinical environment with exposure to chemotherapy agents
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $140,000.00 - $165,000.00 per year
