RLF is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer/Designer to provide technical leadership in the design and coordination of plumbing and fire suppression systems. The role is responsible for leading and coordinating the design of plumbing and fire suppression systems throughout all phases of project delivery. This role provides technical expertise, mentors junior staff, and collaborates with multidisciplinary project teams to develop high-quality, coordinated construction documents and support successful project execution through construction.
Responsibilities

Lead the planning, organization, execution, and coordination of mechanical engineering assignments from concept through construction.

Provide technical leadership, direction, and mentorship to engineers and designers while overseeing assigned project work.

Prepare and coordinate the design of plumbing and fire suppression systems, including source equipment, piping distribution systems, controls, and associated components, and develop related construction documents, calculations, specifications, and technical reports.

Provide consulting services, including due diligence assessments, feasibility studies, gap analyses, and technical evaluations.

Coordinate effectively with project teams, clients, architects, contractors, code officials, and other project stakeholders throughout the design and construction process.

Apply engineering standards, building codes, firm quality standards, and project-specific design criteria to develop practical and compliant design solutions.

Perform field investigations to verify existing site and building conditions and incorporate findings into design recommendations.

Lead construction administration activities, including reviewing submittals and shop drawings, responding to RFIs, conducting field observations, and assisting with project closeout.

Collaborate with discipline leaders and senior technical staff to resolve complex engineering challenges and support innovative design solutions.

Flexibility in work hours may be required to meet project deadlines and business needs.

Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree mechanical engineering preferred.

Minimum of 10 years of relevant mechanical engineering or plumbing/fire protection design experience. Experience in an AEC firm preferred.

Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.

NICET certification a plus.

Sustainability credential (LEED AP, Green Globes Professional, or similar) preferred.

Demonstrated experience designing plumbing and fire suppression systems, including equipment and piping sizing.

Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including ASPE, NFPA, IBC, FBC, and UFC.

Experience using Revit and/or AutoCAD to develop construction documents.

Experience with fire suppression hydraulic calculation software such as HASS or AutoSPRINK RVT preferred.

Demonstrated ability to lead projects, manage priorities, and make sound technical decisions with minimal supervision.

Strong interpersonal, client service, and communication skills.

Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills, with exceptional attention to detail.

Flexibility to occasionally adjust work hours to support project milestones, client commitments, and team collaboration.

Proficiency in Microsoft 365.
