MTNA Greenville Plant is seeking a highly motivated Paint Process Engineer to support and optimize automated paint operations within our manufacturing facility. This role is responsible for ensuring paint system performance, product quality, and operational efficiency through hands-on troubleshooting, process improvement, and technical leadership. The ideal candidate will have experience with robotic paint systems, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to work cross-functionally in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support daily startup and stable operation of automated paint systems, ensuring safety, quality, and production targets are consistently met
- Monitor and improve paint process performance, including first-pass yield, transfer efficiency, and defect reduction
- Lead root cause analysis and troubleshooting of paint defects such as runs, sags, orange peel, contamination, and coverage issues
- Program, modify, and optimize robotic paint applications (including FANUC systems) for both new model launches and existing production
- Troubleshoot and support PLC-controlled equipment to minimize downtime and improve system reliability
- Design, develop, and validate part hangers/racking systems to ensure optimal paint coverage and finish quality
- Support new product launches, including process validation, equipment setup, and parameter development
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including production, maintenance, quality, and engineering to resolve issues and drive improvements
- Train and mentor Paint Technicians on equipment operation, troubleshooting techniques, and best practices
- Lead and support continuous improvement initiatives focused on cost reduction, efficiency gains, and waste elimination
- Maintain accurate process documentation, standard work instructions, and audit compliance records
- Work with external vendors and suppliers on equipment upgrades, process improvements, and new technology implementation
- Analyze process data and provide input for budgeting, forecasting, and capital planning
- Respond to off-shift or emergency calls to support critical paint system issues as needed
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 1-3 years of experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably in paint or coatings operations
- Experience with automated robotic paint application systems required
- Working knowledge of primer, basecoat, and clearcoat application processes
- Experience identifying and resolving common paint defects and surface quality issues
- Hands-on experience with spray equipment, including guns and bell applicators
- Experience with PLC troubleshooting and programming required (Allen Bradley (Rockwell) Logix 5000)
- Familiarity with solvent-based paint mixing and delivery systems
- Experience with robotic systems such as FANUC preferred
