Council on Aging of Buncombe County (COABC) was established in 1964 and is a 501(c)3 charitable organization that serves adults 60 or older, primarily in Buncombe County. www.COABC.org
Mission: Promote the dignity, independence, and well-being of adults through service, education, and advocacy.
General Function:
Under the supervision of the Executive Director, this position involves case assistance and resource coordination services, supporting client’s economic, emotional, social, and/or environmental needs. Commitment to and enthusiasm for the COABC’s mission is essential. The work involves primarily phone-based client care for individuals 60+ and/or their families, with in-person care as needed. This is a grant-funded position. Compliance with all service standards for other funding sources is required.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assess client needs and eligibility for services;
- Work directly with clients, including home/office visits;
- Accept, document, and follow up on referrals
- Develop, revise, and implement service plans to meet identified needs. Includes the functions of assessment, referral, follow-up, and advocacy;
- Make recommendations and referrals for services within the community or elsewhere within the agency;
- Explain policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and legal requirements to clients;
- Document work in an accurate and timely manner;
- Prepare and file reports as applicable;
- Maintain regular communication with supervisor: inform of progress, obtain suggestions, determine outcome, and arrive at decisions;
- Travel within the assigned areas;
- Other duties as assigned.
Full performance knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Excellent oral and written communication and listening skills;
- Knowledge of aging services and agencies with an understanding of the special needs of the aging population;
- Comprehension of current social problems and their effects on individuals, groups, and society;
- Ability to listen and work effectively with people from all socioeconomic levels and backgrounds;
- Good knowledge of interviewing techniques and human behavior; ability to establish and maintain appropriate helping relationships with people;
- Ability to acquire a knowledge of established and changing laws, regulations, rules, procedures, policies, and systems as they relate to aging services;
- Ability to communicate with diverse populations;
- Good powers of observation and analysis;
- Works well as part of a team;
- Strong attention to detail;
- Ability to multitask;
- Must have a positive attitude;
- Proficient use of computers, Google Suite, email, internet, and database programs;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with volunteers, community groups interested in the programs, coworkers, supervisors, and the general public;
- Other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s in Social Work from an accredited institution plus two years of directly related experience. Multilingual abilities are a plus.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in a Human Services field from an accredited institution or the appropriate amount of relevant experience in aging services.
Must be 21 or older, have a valid NCDL, reliable vehicle, and proof of auto insurance (specific limits required).

- Salary: $23.00 per hour
- Schedule: Flexible scheduling during weekdays (Monday through Friday) from 8:30am - 4:30pm, to be determined with the person hired
- Work Location: In-person with an option for one set remote day
