Position Summary
The Machine Shop Quality Inspector is responsible for ensuring that all manufactured components meet engineering specifications, customer requirements, and applicable quality standards. This position plays a critical role in the inspection of in-process and finished parts, the control and revision of quality documentation, and the organization’s ongoing efforts to achieve ISO 9001 certification. The ideal candidate combines hands-on metrology experience with strong attention to detail and a collaborative approach to continuous improvement. Work week is day shift M-Th 6-4
Key Responsibilities
Part Inspection & Measurement
- Perform first-article, in-process, and final inspections of machined components using precision measuring instruments including calipers, micrometers, height gauges, CMM, and surface plates.
- Interpret engineering drawings, GD&T callouts, and customer specifications to verify dimensional and geometric conformance.
- Identify, segregate, tag, and document non-conforming material.
- Communicate inspection findings to machinists, programmers, and production supervisors in a clear and timely manner.
- Maintain calibration records for gauges and measuring equipment; coordinate with calibration service providers as needed.
Document Control & Revisions
- Create, review, revise, and release quality documents including inspection plans, work instructions, and quality control plans.
- Maintain the document control system to ensure that only current, approved revisions are in use on the production floor.
- Update relevant documentation in a timely manner.
- Archive obsolete documents per established retention policies and regulatory requirements.
- Coordinate with engineering, production, and management to gather technical input needed for accurate document creation and revision.
ISO Standards Implementation & Compliance
- Support the development, implementation, and maintenance of the Quality Management System (QMS) in accordance with ISO 9001:2015
- Participate in internal audits and facilitate corrective actions; assist in preparation for external third-party surveillance and certification audits.
- Identify opportunities for process improvement and document findings using tools such as root cause analysis, fishbone diagrams, and 8D reports.
- Train production personnel on quality procedures, document control requirements, and ISO compliance expectations.
- Monitor and report on key quality metrics including first-pass yield, scrap rate, and customer returns; present findings to management.
- Assist the Quality Manager in maintaining and improving the organization’s ISO registration status.
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or GED; associate degree or vocational/technical certification in machining, manufacturing, or quality preferred.
- Minimum 2–5 years of experience performing dimensional inspection in a machine shop or precision manufacturing environment.
- Proficiency reading and interpreting engineering drawings and GD&T (ASME Y14.5).
- Hands-on experience with precision measuring equipment (calipers, micrometers, CMM, optical comparators, etc.).
- Familiarity with ISO 9001 quality management system requirements and documentation practices.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to prepare clear inspection reports and work instructions.
Preferred
- Experience with ISO 9001:2015
- Familiarity with document control.
- Experience performing or participating in internal quality audits.
- Knowledge of SPC (Statistical Process Control) and basic quality tools (FMEA, control plans, MSA).
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
This position is performed primarily on the production floor and in a quality lab environment. The following physical demands are representative of those required:
- Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the facility for extended periods.
- Frequent use of hands and fingers for handling precision instruments and operating computer equipment.
- Occasionally required to lift and carry items up to 30 lbs.
- Exposure to moderate noise levels, cutting fluids, oils, and metal chips typical of a machine shop environment; PPE required.
- Close visual acuity required for reading blueprints, operating measuring instruments, and inspecting fine surface details.
