Company Overview
CanGlobal, an E3 Company, is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Field Service Technician to support the installation, commissioning, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of drilling equipment at customer locations. This position requires extensive travel and strong mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical troubleshooting capabilities.
Preference will be given to candidates located in the West Texas region, including Midland, Odessa, Pecos, Andrews, Seminole, Big Spring, and surrounding areas, due to the concentration of customer operations within the Permian Basin.
The successful candidate will serve as a technical resource for customers, perform field repairs and inspections, support recertification and rebuild projects, and assist in delivering industry-leading service on top drives, powered catwalks, hydraulic wrenches, and related drilling equipment..
Key Responsibilities
- Install, commission, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair drilling equipment, including Top Drives, Powered Catwalks, Hydraulic Wrenches, electrical control systems, and related components.
- Troubleshoot hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical systems and perform jobsite diagnostics to determine corrective actions.
- Read and interpret hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical schematics, technical drawings, and service manuals.
- Perform preventive maintenance inspections, identify required repairs, and notify supervision of equipment or tooling concerns.
- Conduct repairs involving traction motor alignments, main bearing end-play verification, gearbox backlash verification, hydraulic testing, and electrical system testing.
- Utilize diagnostic and precision tools including multimeters, amp probes, meggers, oscilloscopes, torque wrenches, micrometers, calipers, and process meters.
- Measure and record technical data as tasks are completed and inspect documentation prior to job closure.
- Assist with equipment recertifications, rebuilds, upgrades, and shop-based technical support when not assigned to field operations.
- Supervise, mentor, and train less experienced technicians while promoting safe and consistent work practices.
- Coordinate daily work activities, monitor workflow, and support customer drilling schedules and project deadlines.
- Maintain accurate service reports, inspection records, expense reports, and customer-facing documentation in a professional and timely manner.
- Provide accurate equipment parts descriptions and part numbers to customers and the Parts Sales Department.
- Visit drilling rigs within assigned regions, communicate with customer representatives, and support customer relationships.
- Identify opportunities for equipment upgrades, add-on systems, aftermarket support, and additional service work.
- Maintain company-issued vehicles, tools, and equipment in safe and professional working condition.
- Comply with and participate in company safety, quality, reporting, and training programs.
- Work overtime, weekends, and travel on short notice as required to meet customer needs.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent required.
- Technical school, trade certification, or relevant vocational training preferred.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, drilling equipment, or oilfield service-related fields.
- Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair industrial equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical schematics and drawings.
- Working knowledge of hydraulic systems, electrical systems up to 600V, and mechanical drive systems.
- Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, torque wrenches, precision measuring instruments, and diagnostic equipment.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently in the field.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including professional service reporting.
- Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Ability to travel extensively throughout the United States and internationally when required.
- Ability to work overtime, weekends, and on-call schedules to meet customer operational requirements.
- Valid Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.
- Valid Passport or ability to obtain one.
- Ability to pass customer and company-required drug, alcohol, background, and safety screening requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Resides in or near the West Texas / Permian Basin region, including Midland, Odessa, Andrews, Pecos, Seminole, Big Spring, or surrounding areas.
- Experience servicing Top Drives, Iron Roughnecks, Powered Catwalks, Hydraulic Wrenches, Mud Pumps, or other drilling equipment.
- Previous experience supporting drilling rig operations.
- Advanced hydraulic troubleshooting and repair experience.
- Advanced electrical troubleshooting experience, including motor controls and VFD systems.
- Experience with equipment commissioning, recertification, and overhaul projects.
- Familiarity with OEM drilling equipment such as NOV, Canrig, Tesco, Schlumberger, or similar manufacturers.
- Experience mentoring or training junior technicians.
- Current wellsite safety certifications such as H2S, Safeland, PEC, First Aid/CPR, or equivalent.
Technical Competencies
- Ability to read and understand schematics, drawings, and technical documentation.
- Ability to troubleshoot complete drilling equipment systems.
- Ability to use process meters, multimeters, amp probes, meggers, scopes, micrometers, and other precision-measuring equipment.
- Knowledge of OEM drilling equipment and ability to perform mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical repairs.
- Electrical knowledge up to 600V and strong hydraulic/mechanical troubleshooting capability.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Frequent climbing of stairs, ladders, and drilling equipment structures.
- Frequent bending, kneeling, crouching, and stooping.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to safely use hand tools and power tools.
- Ability to operate company vehicles safely.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and industrial field environments.
- Ability to travel extensively, including short-notice customer assignments.
