Overview
A Quality Control (QC) professional in the block manufacturing industry ensures that concrete blocks, bricks, and pavers meet strict structural and industry standards. They execute tests on raw materials, monitor the manufacturing process, and inspect finished blocks for dimensional accuracy, compressive strength, and durability.
Core Responsibilities
- Raw Material Testing: Test aggregates, cement, and water for moisture content and gradation.
- Process Monitoring: Oversee batching ratios, mixing times, and vibration frequency.
- Dimensional Checks: Measure block length, width, height, and squareness using calipers and gauges.
- Structural Testing: Conduct compression and flexural strength tests on cured block samples.
- Defect Inspection: Identify cracks, chips, color variations, and surface defects.
- Compliance Assurance: Ensure products meet ASTM, EN, or local building code standards.
- Data Documentation: Maintain meticulous records of test results, batch numbers, and defect logs.
Key Performance Metrics
- Compressive strength limits (e.g., psi or MPa)
- Water absorption percentage
- Dimensional tolerance compliance
- Scrap and rework rates
- Customer defect complaint logs
Required Qualifications
- Experience: Prefer 1-3 years in concrete, masonry, or heavy building materials or related experience.
- Education: Minimal: High school diploma. Preferred: Associate’s or Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering or Construction.
- Certifications: Current or willing to obtain the following: ACI (American Concrete Institute) Concrete Field Testing or ICPI (Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute) certifications.
- Physical Ability: Capability to lift up to 50 lbs. and stand for extended periods.
Essential Skills
- High attention to detail.
- Proficiency with testing equipment (e.g., compression machines, moisture meters, micrometers).
- Strong mathematical and data analysis skills.
- Knowledge of industry standards and specifications.
