Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled DOT Asphalt Paving Specialist with experience in paving Department of Transportation (DOT) state roads and highways. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of DOT regulations, asphalt paving processes, and quality control measures required for state-funded projects. This role requires hands-on experience in operating supervising paving crews, and ensuring compliance with DOT specifications and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Paving Operations& Execution:
- Perform asphalt paving for DOT projects, including state roads, highways, and interstates.
- Operate paving machinery such as pavers, rollers, and milling machines to achieve required compaction and smoothness.
- Ensure proper asphalt temperature, thickness, and application in compliance with DOT specifications.
- Conduct grade and slope checks to maintain proper drainage and road integrity.
- Assists in setting up traffic control measures and safety zones per DOT regulations.
Regulatory Compliance & Quality Control:
- Interpret and follow state DOT project specifications, blueprints, and work orders.
- Conduct asphalt sampling and testing (density, smoothness, and compaction) to meet quality standards.
- Work closely with DOT inspectors and project managers to ensure compliance with all state regulations.
- Maintain detailed records of material usage, work progress, and testing results for DOT reporting.
Crew Supervision & Leadership:
- Oversee paving crew members, ensuring tasks are completed safely and efficiently.
- Train and mentor team members on proper asphalt paving techniques and safety procedures.
- Communicate effectively with site supervisors, truck drivers, and other construction personnel.
Equipment Maintenance & Safety:
- Perform routine equipment inspections and maintenance to prevent breakdowns.
- Identify and report any equipment malfunctions to minimize project delays.
- Ensure adherence to OSHA and DOT Safety regulations, including proper use of PPE and hazard awareness.
Qualifications & Experience:
- 5+years of experience in asphalt paving, with a focus on DOT state road projects.
- Strong knowledge of DOT paving specifications, materials, and quality control processes.
- Proficiency in operating asphalt paving machinery (paver, rollers, milling machines, etc).
- Ability to read and interpret DOT blueprints, project plans, and grading specifications.
- Experience working with hot mix asphalt (HMA), Superpave, and stone matrix asphalt (SMA).
Physical & Work Environment Requirements:
- Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.)
- Must be able to lift 50+lbs, stand for long periods, and perform physically demanding tasks.
- Willingness to work nights, weekends, and overtime as required by DOT project schedules.
