Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Commercial Painting Estimator to join our growing Paint Division. This position is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive estimates for commercial painting and coatings projects while supporting the preconstruction process from bid invitation through project turnover.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, highly organized, and knowledgeable in commercial painting systems, estimating software, and construction documents. This individual will work closely with project managers, vendors, subcontractors, and clients to help secure profitable projects and ensure a successful transition into construction.
Essential Responsibilities
- Review construction drawings, specifications, bid documents, and project requirements.
- Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for labor, materials, equipment, and subcontracted work using estimating software such as On-Screen Takeoff (OST), or similar platforms.
- Prepare accurate and competitive cost estimates and bid proposals for commercial painting and industrial coating projects.
- Solicit, analyze, and compare pricing from vendors and subcontractors.
- Conduct site visits and attend pre-bid meetings as required.
- Review RFIs, addenda, and scope revisions, incorporating changes into project estimates.
- Identify project risks, scope gaps, exclusions, and value engineering opportunities.
- Collaborate with Project Managers and Operations during project turnover to ensure a smooth transition from estimating to execution.
- Assist in developing preliminary project schedules and budgets.
- Maintain organized bid files, estimating records, contracts, and correspondence.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, general contractors, vendors, and subcontractors.
- Monitor bid opportunities and support business development efforts by identifying new projects.
- Participate in post-bid reviews to improve estimating accuracy and profitability.
Qualifications
Required
- Minimum of 3 years of estimating experience in commercial painting.
- Strong knowledge of commercial painting systems, industrial coatings, surface preparation methods, and production rates.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and construction documents.
- Experience performing quality takeoffs and preparing competitive bid proposals.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and estimating software (Excel, OST, or similar).
- Excellent mathematical, analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple bids and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation. Must have construction experience.
Preferred
- Experience estimating industrial coatings, floor coatings, wallcoverings, drywall finishing, and specialty finishes.
- Experience working on healthcare, higher education, warehouse, manufacturing, hospitality, retail, and office projects.
- Knowledge of cost control methods, contract negotiations, and subcontractor management.
- Customer-focused, self-motivated, and team-oriented with strong follow-through skills.
