About the role
Poppy Plumbing is looking for a dependable residential service and repair plumber who can independently handle most routine calls, communicate clearly with homeowners, complete quality work, and involve the lead plumber before a job becomes unsafe or exceeds your current competence.
You will diagnose common residential plumbing problems, explain practical options, complete authorized repairs, document the work, and leave the home clean. You will have support on advanced, unfamiliar, hazardous, permit-sensitive, and major jobs. We evaluate demonstrated ability through your work history, practical assessment, and field judgment rather than using a fixed years-of-experience cutoff.
What you will do
- Run most routine residential service and repair calls from arrival through diagnosis, authorization, repair, testing, customer explanation, and cleanup.
- Diagnose and repair common issues involving toilets, faucets, disposals, fixtures, shutoff valves, leaks, drain stoppages, standard tank water heaters, and accessible water and waste piping within your demonstrated competence.
- Protect the home with containment, drop cloths, shoe covers, PPE, and safe work practices.
- Select appropriate materials, complete authorized repairs to applicable code and manufacturer instructions, and verify the repair before leaving.
- Keep clear notes, photos, measurements, parts used, unresolved risks, and recommended follow-up in the company's dispatch or job-record system.
- Keep your work area, vehicle, and tools organized and follow Poppy Plumbing's vehicle, tool, safety, and driving procedures.
Consultative customer service and sales
- Diagnose accurately before recommending work. Offer repair or replacement options that fit the condition, safety needs, and customer's stated goals.
- Explain pricing, benefits, and tradeoffs in plain language. Ask for authorization before performing additional work or changing the approved scope.
- Follow the company's approved pricebook, discount, and financing procedures. Do not create unapproved pricing or promises.
- Document the recommendations the customer approved and declined, along with the reason for any follow-up.
- Collect payment when Poppy Plumbing's policy requires it and provide complete job documentation.
Healthy sales come from trust, honest diagnosis, and clear communication. We do not use pressure, fear, or recommendations for unnecessary work. The goal is to help the homeowner make an informed decision and deliver the work they authorize.
When to Involve the Lead Plumber
Pause the work and contact the lead plumber or supervisor when:
- The diagnosis is uncertain after basic tests, the repair is unfamiliar, or a wrong step could cause damage, flooding, gas exposure, contamination, injury, or a failed inspection.
- The job involves a major fixture or equipment replacement, a whole-home repipe, sewer replacement or substantial sewer-line work, trenching, excavation, extensive gas work, a complex tankless system, a backflow assembly, or other work outside your demonstrated competence.
- The estimate is high-value or unusual, the price is outside your authority, or the scope changes materially after customer approval.
- The work raises a code or permit question, requires work outside the company's approved safety, insurance, licensing, or pricing procedures, or needs a decision beyond the approved pricebook.
- The customer disputes the diagnosis, price, authorization, or scope, or requests work you are not trained or authorized to perform.
Escalating early is part of doing the job well. Leave the site safe, explain what is known and unknown, and provide complete notes so the lead can take over efficiently.
What success looks like
- You complete most routine calls safely and efficiently without avoidable callbacks, property damage, or code or safety shortcuts.
- Customers understand the diagnosis, options, price, approved work, and recommended next step.
- Recommendations are accurate, appropriately documented, and never driven by pressure or fear.
- Your notes and photos allow another technician to understand the condition, work performed, parts used, and remaining risk.
- You recognize limits early, involve the lead on the right jobs, and use feedback to expand the calls you can handle independently.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated residential service and repair competence through work history, apprenticeship progression, a practical assessment, or equivalent hands-on experience. No fixed years-of-experience cutoff.
- Valid driver's license and a safe driving record appropriate for the position.
- Ability to lift and carry typical plumbing tools and materials and work in crawlspaces or attics when conditions are safe and PPE is used.
- Professional communication with homeowners and coworkers, reliable attendance, and accurate job documentation.
- Willingness to follow company safety, code, permit, customer-protection, pricebook, payment, and escalation procedures.
Helpful experience includes water heaters, drain machines, leak isolation, fixture repair, residential troubleshooting, dispatch or CRM systems, and explaining repair options to homeowners. These are helpful but not required.
