TITLE: Unit Secretary, LPN
REPORTS TO: Director of Nursing
I. Job Summary
Assisting the Director of Nursing Services in the planning, organizing, directing of the day to
day functions of the Nursing Department in accordance with current federal, state and local
standards, guidelines and regulations and facility policies. The objective is to ensure the
highest degree of quality of care is maintained at all times.
II. Qualifications
a. Must possess current CPR certificate and current LPN license.
b. Must be able to read, write and speak the English language in an understandable
manner.
c. Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant
such action.
d. Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with customers, family members, visitors,
personnel, government agencies/personnel and the general public.
e. Must possess leadership and supervisory ability and willingness to work harmoniously with personnel.
f. Must be personable, enthusiastic and resourceful.
III. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
a. Must be able to move intermittently throughout the work day.
b. Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
c. Must possess sight/hearing senses or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to
function adequately.
d. Must function independently, have flexibility, personal integrity and the ability to work
effectively with others.
e. Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability.
f. Must be able to relate to and work with the ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset and
at times hostile people.
IV. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
a. Review the departments Policy and Procedure Manual.
b. Assist clinical nursing staff on entering MD orders in a timely manner.
c. Assist clinical nursing staff with preparing for New Admissions; take Nurse to Nurse
report, assist with preparing the chart with Diagnosis, Allergies, entering Standing Batch
orders.
d. Plan, conduct and participate in In-service Education Programs.
e. Assist with setting up appointments as ordered per MD. Assist with communication
between families, resident, MD, clinical staff. Assist with setting up transportation as
needed.
f. Assist with follow up on daily lab results; communication between, MD, clinical staff,
immediate supervisor for any concerns.
g. Assist with clinical staff on ordering house stock medications. Organization of
medication room, removal of expired medications, maintaining necessary supplies as
needed.
h. Perform administrative duties such as answering telephone calls, filing/scanning medical
records, completing forms, completing required audits, as necessary.
i. Assist and maintains general organization of nursing units.
j. Maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest and positive emphasis; including
a calm environment throughout the department.
