Position Purpose
The General Merchandise Manager is responsible for leading the General Merchandise department to achieve sales, profitability, customer service, and operational goals. This position oversees merchandising, inventory management, labor planning, promotional execution, and team development while ensuring a safe, clean, and customer-focused shopping environment. The General Merchandise Manager drives department performance through effective leadership, execution, and accountability.
Key Responsibilities Department Leadership & Operations
- Direct the daily operations of the General Merchandise department.
- Ensure execution of company merchandising standards, displays, and promotional programs.
- Monitor department conditions to maintain a clean, organized, and fully stocked sales floor.
- Establish priorities and delegate tasks to maximize productivity and operational efficiency.
- Maintain compliance with company policies, procedures, and safety standards.
- Support overall store objectives through collaboration with store leadership and department managers.
Sales & Financial Performance
- Achieve department sales, gross margin, and profitability goals.
- Analyze sales trends and performance metrics to identify opportunities and risks.
- Develop action plans to increase sales, improve customer satisfaction, and control expenses.
- Monitor labor utilization and schedule effectively to meet operational needs.
- Manage department shrink and implement loss prevention initiatives.
Merchandising & Inventory Control
- Ensure accurate ordering, receiving, and inventory management processes.
- Maintain proper inventory levels to support sales while minimizing excess stock.
- Review out-of-stocks and take corrective action to improve product availability.
- Execute seasonal, promotional, and special merchandising programs according to company standards.
- Ensure product pricing accuracy and signage integrity throughout the department.
Customer Service
- Deliver an exceptional customer experience by promoting a customer-first culture.
- Resolve customer concerns promptly and professionally.
- Monitor department service levels and implement improvements as needed.
- Foster an environment where associates actively engage and assist customers.
People Leadership & Development
- Recruit, train, coach, and develop department associates.
- Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing feedback.
- Build associate engagement through effective communication and recognition.
- Hold associates accountable for performance, productivity, and customer service expectations.
- Develop succession plans and identify high-potential talent within the department.
Safety & Compliance
- Promote and maintain a safe working environment for associates and customers.
- Ensure compliance with all company, local, state, and federal regulations.
- Conduct routine department inspections and address identified issues.
- Follow proper procedures regarding equipment use, inventory handling, and workplace safety.
