ABOUT THE ROLE
Blackburn Labs is hiring a Healthcare Integration Engineer to join a fast-moving health-tech team and own the pipelines that move clinical and operational data between EHRs, revenue-cycle systems, patient apps, and analytics platforms. You’ll design, build, and support production-grade interfaces in Mirth Connect / NextGen Connect, translating HL7 and FHIR messages into modern API and JSON/XML workflows while ensuring every byte is secure, traceable, and HIPAA-compliant.
Engagement Details
This is a part-time, hourly position for an initial term of 9 months, with strong potential for extension based on project needs and fit. Hours are flexible but expected to align with project milestones and stakeholder availability.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Architect & develop interfaces
- Build and maintain channels in Mirth Connect for HL7 v2 (ADT, ORU, SIU, MDM), CCDA, and FHIR resources.
- Design RESTful (and occasional SOAP) endpoints, mapping data to JSON, XML, or flat-file formats.
Transform & enrich data
- Write JavaScript (within Mirth) plus Python or shell scripts for complex transformations, look-ups, and validations.
- Leverage XSLT, JSONata, or similar tools for schema changes and version upgrades.
Operational ownership
- Set up interface monitoring, alerting, and automated recoveries; analyze logs and message queues to keep feeds > 99.9 % available.
- Package channel code in Git, automate deployments through CI/CD pipelines, and document every change.
Customer onboarding & support
- Gather workflow requirements, draft interface specs, and lead test plans with provider and vendor teams.
- Troubleshoot production issues, triage data discrepancies, and communicate resolutions to clinical and technical stakeholders.
Security & compliance
- Implement secure transport (VPN, TLS, SFTP) and role-based access.
- Contribute to risk assessments, audit trails, and HIPAA documentation.
WHAT YOU BRING
Must-have
- 3 + years building healthcare interfaces in production
- 2 + years hands-on with Mirth Connect (channel development, deployment, monitoring)
- Deep knowledge of HL7 v2 (segments, ACK flow), FHIR R4, and CCDA
- Strong grasp of JSON & XML data modeling and transformation
- REST API design & consumption; Postman or Insomnia proficiency
- Scripting in JavaScript (Mirth), plus Python or Bash; solid SQL skills
- Understanding of VPNs, TLS certs, OAuth2, SFTP, and other secure transports
- Clear written & verbal communication; ability to juggle dozens of concurrent feeds
Nice-to-have
- Experience with Redox, Rhapsody, Cloverleaf, Corepoint, or Ensemble
- Cloud familiarity (AWS/GCP/Azure) and containerization (Docker/K8s)
- Automated testing frameworks for interfaces
- Experience with analytics platforms or data lakes
- Knowledge of healthcare quality measures or revenue-cycle data
- Formal DevOps or SRE background
- Experience working with distributed, cross-functional teams
