HVAC Controls Electrician
Job Summary
UMC is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented HVAC Controls Electrician to install, wire, troubleshoot, and maintain HVAC control systems in commercial and industrial facilities. This hands-on role requires strong electrical and controls experience, the ability to work independently from technical drawings and specifications, and a commitment to delivering safe, high-quality installations.
The ideal candidate will have experience with building automation systems (BAS), control wiring, conduit installation, electrical troubleshooting, and HVAC control devices.
Key Responsibilities
Installation & Electrical Construction
- Install, wire, and terminate HVAC control systems, including controllers, sensors, actuators, relays, VFDs, thermostats, and other field devices.
- Pull wire, install conduit, and complete electrical terminations according to project drawings, specifications, and code requirements.
- Mount and connect control panels and related HVAC controls equipment.
- Install low-voltage and line-voltage control wiring for HVAC systems.
- Verify proper operation of installed equipment through startup and functional testing.
Controls & Technical Expertise
- Read and interpret electrical schematics, control drawings, sequence of operations, and construction documents.
- Assist with controller configuration, point-to-point verification, and system commissioning activities.
- Ensure all installations comply with National Electrical Code (NEC), local electrical codes, and project specifications.
- Coordinate with project managers, controls technicians, electricians, mechanical contractors, and other trades to ensure successful project completion.
Troubleshooting & Maintenance
- Diagnose and repair HVAC control system issues, including electrical, communication, and device-related problems.
- Troubleshoot control panels, sensors, actuators, relays, and BAS communication networks.
- Perform preventative maintenance and service work on existing control systems.
- Utilize multimeters, electrical testing equipment, and diagnostic tools to identify and resolve issues.
- Document service activities, repairs, and system modifications accurately.
Project Execution
- Work independently from blueprints, schedules, and specifications with minimal supervision.
- Communicate project progress, installation challenges, and technical issues to supervisors and customers.
- Ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and within established timelines.
- Maintain a clean, organized, professional job site.
Required Qualifications
Experience & Technical Knowledge
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in HVAC controls installation, electrical construction, or building automation systems.
- Experience installing and servicing commercial HVAC control systems.
- Strong understanding of control wiring, electrical circuits, and power distribution systems.
- Experience with Building Automation Systems (BAS) and communication protocols such as BACnet, LonWorks, or Modbus.
- Knowledge of HVAC equipment including air handlers, rooftop units, chillers, boilers, VAV boxes, and pumps.
Electrical Skills
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, electrical schematics, control drawings, and specifications.
- Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and local electrical regulations.
- Experience pulling wire, installing conduit, bending conduit, and completing electrical terminations.
- Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and electrical testing equipment.
- Ability to troubleshoot low-voltage and line-voltage control systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Journeyman Electrician License or equivalent electrical training.
- Experience with Johnson Controls, Siemens, Honeywell, Trane, Schneider Electric, Automated Logic, Alerton, or similar BAS platforms.
- HVAC controls commissioning and startup experience.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
- Technical school, apprenticeship training, or controls certification.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand, kneel, bend, climb ladders, and work in mechanical rooms and construction environments.
- Ability to work at heights and in varying environmental conditions.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

Pay: $27.00 - $29.00 per hour
