The Paving Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of an asphalt paver to lay hot mix asphalt (HMA) to grade and specifications on roads, parking lots, and other surfaces. This role requires precise control of paving equipment, coordination with the paving crew, and adherence to quality and safety standards to ensure smooth and even pavement surfaces.
- Operate asphalt paver to lay asphalt material to specified depth, width, and grade.
- Set up and adjust machine controls, screed settings, and conveyors to meet project specifications.
- Monitor material flow, mat thickness, and surface smoothness during paving operations.
- Coordinate with the paving crew, roller operators, and foreman to maintain consistent paving speed and quality.
- Perform daily pre-operational and post-operational inspections of equipment.
- Conduct routine maintenance such as greasing, checking fluids, and cleaning the paver.
- Monitor and maintain proper temperature and uniformity of asphalt mat.
- Communicate clearly with truck drivers for proper material delivery to the hopper.
- Follow all company safety protocols, including the use of required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Assist with general labor or other site duties when paving operations are not active.
- Minimum 2 years of experience operating an asphalt paver in roadway or commercial paving.
- Knowledge of paving principles, including proper compaction and smoothness techniques.
- Ability to read and follow grade stakes, project plans, and specifications.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and dust.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform tasks involving bending, kneeling, climbing, and extended standing.
- Work in high-noise environments and around heavy equipment.
Ability to work long or irregular hours, including nights and weekends, as required by project schedules.
