Who We Are
In 1982, Caroline Ragsdale Reutter served her 7-Layer Caramel Cake at her son's christening, and people haven't stopped asking for it since. More than 40 years later, Caroline's Cakes ships handmade Southern layer cakes — and now small-batch ice cream — from our Spartanburg bakery to doorsteps across the country. We've been featured on Oprah's Favorites List five times, but what we're proudest of is simpler than that: every box that leaves our building carries someone's birthday, anniversary, apology, or "just because."
Our tagline is Eat Cake. Be Happy. In shipping, you're the last person who touches that promise before it reaches a customer.
The Role
Our shipping department is where everything we bake becomes something someone receives. We're looking for an Assistant Shipping Manager to help lead this team — someone who wants to grow with us, build better processes, and treat every package like it's headed to their own grandmother's porch.
This is a leadership role, not just a logistics role. You'll be supporting a small, close-knit team through our busiest and most joyful seasons, and helping shape how our shipping operation grows.
What You'll Do
- Help lead the day-to-day shipping and fulfillment operation — packing, cold-chain handling, carrier coordination, and quality checks
- Support and develop a small team, including coaching, scheduling, and pitching in hands-on during peak weeks
- Own the details that matter: frozen and perishable products arriving in perfect condition, on time, looking beautiful
- Help improve our processes — we're growing, and we want someone who sees a better way and speaks up
- Work closely with our customer care team when a shipment needs a save (it happens — how we respond is what customers remember)
- Roll up your sleeves during the holidays: roughly 40% of our year happens between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and it's all hands on deck
Who You Are
We care more about how you work than what equipment you've operated. You might be a great fit if:
- You believe how something arrives matters as much as what's inside. A crooked label or a melted pint isn't "close enough" to you.
- You've led people, even a few. Maybe you were a shift lead, a team captain, or the person everyone came to when things got hectic — you know how to keep a team steady and cared for.
- You're a collaborator. Our team is small, and titles don't excuse anyone from taping a box in December.
- You own your mistakes and learn from them. We'd rather hear "here's what went wrong and here's my fix" than a perfect story.
- You're curious. Cold-chain shipping, carrier contracts, packaging science — there's a lot to learn here, and we'll teach you if you want to know it.
- You have 2+ years in shipping, fulfillment, or operations. Food, perishables, or e-commerce experience is a plus, but heart and work ethic come first.
