General Statement of Duties and Distinguishing Features of Class
Assist the Head Age Group Coach with the execution of swim practice, swim meets, and other team needs. This is a public service job based in trust, credibility, and competency. It is a critical requirement of this position that the incumbent displays the desire and ability to perform and behave (on duty, as well as off duty) in a manner that does not damage or endanger the loss of trust with the public, co-workers, and other public safety forces.
Examples of Work (Illustrative Only)
- Provides appropriate supervision to all participants.
- Ensures the safety of program participants.
- Attends in-service training sessions and/or staff meetings as requested.
- Uphold the policies and procedures of the City of Mason and Parks & Recreation Department.
- Display knowledge of the department’s Infectious Material & Exposure Incident Policy and facility Emergency Action Procedures.
- Administer and record any necessary first aid/victim care within the level of emergency training.
- Assists in overseeing individual and team entries
- Assists in supervising athletes at meets
- Enforces attendance and discipline policies for swimmers
- Assist in meet organization and preparation as needed
- Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: The following is preferred
- Must be at least 17 years old.
- Must have a competitive swimming background, either as a coach or swimmer.
- Strong knowledge in stroke mechanics and an appreciation for the long-term development process in the sport of swimming.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule (including evenings, weekends & holidays)
Physical Requirements
- Sufficient physical strength, stamina, and conditioning to rescue swimmers in danger of drowning.
- Work for sustained periods of time under adverse environmental conditions associated with swimming (i.e., hot, humid, cold, chemical fumes, etc.).
- Occasional lifting up to 75 pounds as well as possible lifting of an injured individual.
- Some exposure and working with possible hazardous chemicals.
- Frequent exposure to noise levels that may cause distractions, listening and visual observations required at all times.
- Position may require standing, bending, sitting, and kneeling for extended periods of time.
- Normal visual acuity to see objects up close or at a distance, with or without correction, or with or without reasonable accommodation;
- Auditory acuity to hear a variety of electronic devices, not limited to cell phones, timers, pagers, etc. with or without reasonable accommodation.
