A-Class Welder – Night Shift
Location: Port Area
Job Type: Full-Time | Night Shift
Schedule: Monday–Thursday, 10-hour shifts
Overtime: Available and required as project needs dictate, including some Fridays and extended shifts
Pay: $28-$34/hr
Position Overview
We are seeking experienced A-Class Welders to join our team working on large-scale fabrication projects at the Port. This is a hands-on opportunity for skilled welders with strong structural and industrial fabrication experience who can produce high-quality welds while working to strict code and inspection requirements.
Candidates must be comfortable working in a demanding fabrication environment and should have experience with air carbon arc back gouging without the use of a grinder. This skill is essential for our current projects, as welds are subject to third-party inspection and must meet applicable code requirements.
Qualified candidates will be required to successfully complete a weld test prior to receiving an offer.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform high-quality welding on structural steel, heavy fabrication, and industrial components.
- Read and interpret blueprints, welding symbols, fabrication drawings, and job specifications.
- Perform welding in various positions and on different material thicknesses as required.
- Set up and operate welding equipment safely and efficiently.
- Perform air carbon arc back gouging without relying on a grinder.
- Prepare joints and surfaces for welding, including fit-up, cleaning, and positioning.
- Inspect welds visually and identify defects or areas requiring correction.
- Make appropriate adjustments to welding technique and equipment to maintain quality.
- Work closely with fitters and other fabrication personnel to complete projects accurately and efficiently.
- Follow welding procedures, project specifications, safety requirements, and applicable welding codes.
- Maintain a clean and safe work area.
- Work effectively under the direction of supervisors while also being capable of working independently.
- Maintain productivity and quality standards in a fast-paced fabrication environment.
Required Qualifications
- Proven experience as a professional structural, industrial, or heavy fabrication welder.
- Strong ability to read and interpret welding symbols, blueprints, and fabrication drawings.
- Demonstrated experience with air carbon arc back gouging.
- Must be able to back gouge without using a grinder.
- Ability to pass the company's required welding test.
- Strong understanding of weld quality and fabrication standards.
- Ability to work safely with heavy steel and fabrication equipment.
- Ability to work a night-shift schedule and overtime as required.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing code-compliant welds.
- Ability to work in a physically demanding industrial environment.
Welding Test & Hiring Process
Welding tests are conducted Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:00 PM.
Candidates will first submit a resume for review. Based on experience and qualifications, selected candidates will be invited to complete the required weld test. Candidates who successfully pass the required testing and receive an offer will be scheduled to begin the following Monday.
Candidates should plan to spend the entire day at the facility, as each portion of the testing process can take approximately four hours. Candidates are encouraged to bring a lunch and plenty of water.
Fracture Critical Certification results require verification through radiographic testing (RT) and a bend test, so final results may take approximately 24 hours. Candidates who successfully complete both portions of the testing process may receive an offer before relocating, allowing them to begin their assignment already ahead in the qualification process.
What We're Looking For
The strongest candidates will have experience in heavy structural or industrial fabrication and will be comfortable working to strict welding specifications and inspection standards.
Air carbon arc back gouging experience is especially important. Candidates who are familiar with the terminology “back gouge using air carbon arc” and have performed this process professionally are strongly encouraged to apply.
Our current projects involve third-party inspectors who routinely inspect fabrication work to ensure welds meet required codes and specifications. Quality, precision, and consistency are critical.

Pre-Employment Requirements
- Successful completion of required welding test
- Successful completion of applicable certification testing
- Review of company Orientation PowerPoint prior to starting
- Ability to meet all job-site safety and qualification requirements
Pay & Performance Review
Compensation is based on experience and demonstrated skill level. Candidates will be evaluated through the company's testing and qualification process.
For qualifying employees, performance is reviewed during the initial employment period, with opportunities for advancement and increased compensation based on demonstrated skill, quality, productivity, and overall performance.
