Position Summary
The Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides direct care and active treatment services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. DSPs assist persons supported with activities of daily living, personal care, social engagement, leisure activities, behavioral supports, and individualized training programs while promoting dignity, choice, independence, and quality of life.
This position plays a vital role in ensuring each individual receives meaningful support in a safe, clean, and respectful environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Actively engage with persons supported throughout the day while implementing individualized active treatment and training programs.
- Assist individuals with activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, eating, and mobility assistance.
- Provide sensory stimulation and meaningful activities that encourage independence and community involvement.
- Support individuals with leisure, recreational, and social activities while respecting personal choice and individual rights.
- Follow all written service plans, behavior plans, dietary plans, positioning programs, and therapeutic interventions.
- Assist individuals with prescribed therapeutic positioning, range of motion exercises, and gross motor activities.
- Complete all required electronic and written documentation accurately and timely, including behavior tracking, data collection, incident reports, and daily notes.
- Observe and report any behavioral, medical, environmental, or safety concerns to the appropriate supervisor or department.
- Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings, annual reviews, and training sessions as assigned.
- Assist with laundry duties, ensuring clothing is properly cleaned, organized, and returned to individuals’ rooms.
- Provide dining room support services while following sanitation, infection control, and portion control procedures.
- Assist individuals during meals and ensure dietary guidelines and nutritional plans are followed.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and sanitary environment by performing housekeeping duties including vacuuming, mopping, dusting, trash removal, bathroom sanitation, and general cleaning tasks.
- Identify hazards or unsafe conditions and take immediate action to ensure the safety of residents, staff, and visitors.
- Practice proper body mechanics and safe lifting techniques at all times.
- Assist with maintaining facility equipment and report supply or repair needs promptly.
- Follow all OSHA, HIPAA, federal, state, and agency policies and procedures.
- Attend all mandatory trainings, in-services, and continuing education programs.
- Work mandatory overtime and flexible schedules as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
- Ability to professionally communicate with residents, staff, family members, visitors, and government agencies.
- Must be able to pass Level 2 background screening and drug screening requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities preferred.
- Previous caregiving or healthcare experience preferred.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, and stooping throughout the shift.
- Must be able to lift and move up to 30 pounds.
- May be exposed to infectious diseases, odors, and emotionally stressful situations.
- Ability to hear, speak, and observe individuals clearly to ensure safety and effective communication.
- May work beyond normal scheduled hours when necessary.
- Must maintain professionalism and flexibility in a fast-paced care environment.
