At Mystic Lake YMCA Camp, our goals are to teach youth social responsibility through environmental stewardship, community living, and working with one another in a group setting that builds friendships. Youth develop and learn new skills to improve their sense of self-worth and confidence in an accepting environment where all are welcome.
GENERAL FUNCTION
Counselors are responsible for the supervision and safety of their weekly assigned cabin campers. In addition, counselors are responsible for the well-being of all campers attending camp. Counselors are accountable for reviewing and implementing established camp policies and procedures within their assigned area(s). Will reside at Mystic Lake Camp, outside of Clare, Michigan, for the contract's duration.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Being a positive role model for all campers and staff.
- Be on time, in uniform, and exemplify caring, respect, responsibility & honesty for all assigned shifts.
- Supervise the group of campers assigned by the Village Coordinator.
- Greet all campers with a smile and personal greeting.
- Meet and exceed the expectations of campers and parents.
- Plan and implement daily activities for assigned group of campers.
- Help individual campers adjust to camp and have a positive experience.
- Continuously monitor children within their group and provide constructive and positive reinforcement when necessary. Follow the proper discipline protocol when necessary.
- Maintain cleanliness of camp and program areas.
- Maintain a positive attitude and act professionally when interacting with members, program participants, and other staff at all times.
- Report member and guest comments, suggestions, complaints, concerns, and problems to supervisor in a timely manner.
- Assist in the Annual Campaign as needed.
- Exemplify and teach the tradition, spirit, and values of the YMCA.
- Actively participates in maintaining all necessary certifications and obtaining association requirement YMCA trainings.
- Engage with all members, participants, and parents to build strong relationships towards the advancement of the Y.
- Performs other functions and duties as assigned by supervisor.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum age of 18 years old for senior counselors, 17 years old for junior counselors.
- Desire to work with children and peers.
- Outgoing, friendly, and enthusiastic personality.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Experience in supervising children and working with a team.
- Capable of leading, teaching, and supervising children in group activities, recreational activities, and following assigned curriculum.
- Previous experience leading or teaching in the outdoors, camping, and group facilitation skills and experience working with children.
- Ability to accept constructive feedback and guidance from supervisors.
- Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations.
- Completion of YMCA trainings within a required time frame.
