POSITION SUMMARY
The Carpenter is a skilled construction professional responsible for performing carpentry work and providing leadership to construction crews in building and renovating affordable homes for Habitat for Humanity of Lee and Hendry Counties. This position combines technical carpentry expertise with crew leadership responsibilities, including supervising both skilled workers and volunteers. The Carpenter ensures high-quality workmanship, maintains safety standards, and contributes to the successful completion of construction projects that advance Habitat’s mission of providing strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Carpentry & Construction Work
- Perform skilled carpentry work in building and renovating homes, including rough and finish carpentry.
- Execute specialized carpentry tasks including framing, roofing, flooring, trim work, cabinet installation, and door and window installation.
- Utilize knowledge of construction techniques, tools, materials, and building methods to ensure high-quality workmanship.
- Read and interpret construction blueprints, drawings, and specifications to complete work accurately.
- Measure, cut, shape, assemble, and install structural woodwork and related materials according to specifications.
- Use hand tools, power tools, and equipment safely and efficiently to complete assigned tasks.
Crew Leadership & Supervision
- Lead construction crews consisting of skilled workers, unskilled laborers, and volunteers on assigned projects.
- Assign tasks to crew members based on their skills, experience, and project requirements.
- Provide guidance, instruction, and training to workers and volunteers, especially those with varying levels of construction expertise.
- Demonstrate proper techniques and best practices to ensure crew members develop their skills and work safely.
- Foster a positive, inclusive, and mission-focused work environment that engages and motivates volunteers.
- Monitor crew productivity and work quality, providing feedback and making adjustments as needed.
Project Coordination
- Collaborate with project managers, Site Supervisors, and other team members to ensure efficient project execution.
- Coordinate carpentry tasks and activities to meet project timelines and milestones.
- Communicate project progress, challenges, and material needs to supervisors and project managers.
- Attend regular team meetings to discuss project status, address challenges, and provide updates.
- Adapt work plans as needed to accommodate changes in project scope, weather conditions, or unexpected developments.
Quality Control & Inspection
- Conduct regular inspections of carpentry work to ensure it meets Habitat’s quality standards and building code requirements.
- Identify and address quality issues or defects promptly to maintain high construction standards.
- Ensure all work complies with building codes, specifications, and Habitat for Humanity standards.
- Make corrections or adjustments to carpentry work as needed to achieve desired results.
Safety Oversight & Compliance
- Enforce safety protocols and OSHA regulations on construction sites to ensure a safe working environment for all crew members.
- Provide safety training and orientation to crew members, emphasizing the importance of following safety guidelines.
- Model safe work practices and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Identify and address potential safety hazards immediately, taking corrective action to prevent accidents.
- Report any accidents, injuries, or near-miss incidents to supervisors according to established procedures.
- Maintain clean and organized work areas to minimize safety risks.
Material & Tool Management
- Manage and track carpentry materials, tools, and equipment assigned to the crew.
- Coordinate the procurement and delivery of carpentry materials, ensuring supplies are available when needed.
- Minimize material waste through efficient planning, accurate measurements, and proper handling.
- Maintain tools and equipment in good working condition, reporting maintenance or replacement needs promptly.
- Ensure proper storage and security of tools, materials, and equipment at job sites.
Community & Volunteer Engagement
- Work closely with volunteers, providing patient instruction and creating a positive, welcoming experience.
- Represent Habitat for Humanity professionally and positively during construction projects.
- Engage respectfully with the local community, neighbors, and homeowner candidates during construction activities.
- Communicate Habitat’s mission and values to volunteers and community members through actions and words.
Documentation, Problem Solving & Adaptability
- Maintain accurate records of carpentry activities, including daily logs and progress reports.
- Document any modifications or changes made during the construction process.
- Complete required paperwork, time sheets, and safety documentation accurately and on time.
- Address work-related issues, challenges, or obstacles, finding practical solutions to keep projects on track.
- Think critically and make sound decisions in the field to resolve construction-related problems.
- Be flexible and adapt to changing conditions, priorities, or project requirements.
- Maintain a favorable working relationship with all other company employees to foster and promote a cooperative and harmonious working climate, which will be conducive to maximum employee morale, productivity, efficiency, and effectiveness.
REQUIREMENTS
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Vocational or technical training in carpentry or construction trades preferred.
Experience
- Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of experience in residential carpentry and construction.
- Experience leading or supervising construction crews preferred.
- Experience working with volunteers in a construction setting preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Proficient in all aspects of residential carpentry, including framing, roofing, finish work, and general construction.
- Demonstrated leadership ability with experience supervising crews and managing volunteers.
- Strong knowledge of construction techniques, building materials, tools, and equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, construction drawings, and specifications.
- Solid understanding of building codes, safety regulations, and OSHA requirements.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to think critically in the field.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills for working with diverse teams and volunteers.
- Ability to train and mentor others with patience and clear instruction.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong work ethic with commitment to quality, safety, and mission focus.

Licenses, Certifications & Other Requirements
- Valid Florida Driver’s License and acceptable driving record.
- Must pass background check and drug screening.
- Ability to operate construction vehicles and equipment as needed.
- Must own basic hand tools required for carpentry work.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification preferred.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.

- Regularly required to ascend and descend ladders, scaffolding, and elevated work platforms to perform work at heights.
- Regularly required to operate hand tools, power tools, and construction equipment safely and with precision.
- Regularly required to perform repetitive motions, including hammering, sawing, drilling, and fastening.
- Regularly required to communicate clearly and effectively so that instructions and safety information are understood by crew members and volunteers.
- Regularly required to detect and interpret visual information, including reading measurements, blueprints, levels, and construction details at close and moderate range.
- Regularly required to detect auditory signals, including equipment sounds, verbal communication, and safety warnings on active construction sites.
- Regularly required to demonstrate manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for precise carpentry work.
- Regularly required to operate a motor vehicle to travel between construction sites.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & CONDITIONS

- Primarily outdoor work on active construction sites with exposure to varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, humidity, and direct sunlight.
- Regular exposure to construction site conditions, including elevated noise levels, dust, debris, and vibration from power tools and equipment.
- Regular work around power tools, heavy equipment, and construction materials, including potentially hazardous substances.
- Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, steel-toed boots, and other protective gear as conditions require.
- Work schedule is Tuesday through Saturday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with occasional overtime as needed.
- Occasional weekend work may be required for special volunteer events or project deadlines.
- Requires regular travel to various construction sites throughout Lee and Hendry Counties.
