Calypso, Malolo and Quicksilver Charters seek an experienced captain with Valid Merchant Mariners License issued by the USCG endorsed as Master of Motor Vessels, 100 ton, to operate large company passenger catamarans operating in Maalaea and Lahaina harbors and nearshore and open ocean waters.
Vessels run snorkel trip Maalaea and Lahaina Harbor to Molokini, Lanai and nearshore snorkel spots, as well as dinner cruises, whale watch, and other charters 365 days per year.
Experience in Maui waters preferred.
Position Summary:
Position is responsible for overseeing vessel operations, supervising vessel personnel, and overseeing safety, quality control, hiring, training, vessel maintenance, and regulatory compliance programs for one or more Company vessels. This position provides support to Management, represents the Company in various capacities, and may approve purchases.
Primary duties and responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
- Oversee vessel operations, safety, quality control, training, vessel maintenance, and regulatory compliance programs for one or more Company vessels;
- Oversee the hiring, training, discipline and management of the day-to-day activities of vessel officers and crew for Company vessels operating from Ma'alaea harbor
- Oversee scheduling of vessel trips and the requisite officers and crew for Company vessels operating from Ma'alaea harbor;
- Ensure Company vessel officers and crew are qualified and maintain compliance with required certifications for the position;
- Operate Company vessels;
- Assist in managing the day-to-day upkeep of Company vessel(s) operating from Ma'alaea harbor to a high standard of readiness, reliability, safety and aesthetic appeal;
- Ensure Company vessels and equipment are operated and well maintained in compliance with all applicable laws, regulations and guidelines mandated by federal, state and local agencies, as well as the dictates of prudent marine practice;
- Ensure Company vessel engines are subject to regularly scheduled maintenance;
- Oversee quality control pertaining to all functions of the position;
- Support compliance with DOT/USCG drug and alcohol testing requirements;
- Conduct safety inspections and USCG drills on Company vessels;
- Maintain compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal safety and environmental regulations;
- Ensure vessels are in an inspection-ready condition at all times;
- Complete and submit required administrative reporting timely, clearly and accurately, including Accident/Incident Reports and other required processes;
- Ensure the safety of passengers, riders and crew and is maximized through careful and vigorous administration and enforcement of safety policies and guidelines;
- Demonstrate practical knowledge of all phases of shipboard safety procedures and knowledge of location and use of all firefighting and safety equipment and personal protective equipment;
- Ensure chemicals and other types of hazardous or caustic materials are handled and disposed of in compliance with Material Safety Data Sheets, rules and regulations;
- Ensure that Company policies and regulatory requirements are understood by, valued and followed by officers and crew;
- Carry out all duties and represent the Company in a professional manner at all times;
- Maintain and report records in an organized, neat, professional and timely manner;
- Participate in internal and external meetings, trainings, and communications as required;
- Perform other duties not listed here when requested by management.
Requirements:
- Valid Merchant Mariners License issued by the USCG endorsed as Master of Motor Vessels; 100 ton; Medical Certificate;
- Valid First Aid CPR AED Certification;
- Valid FCC Marine Radio Operator Permit
- Valid County of Maul Liquor Commission Liquor Card;
- Valid Driver’s License;
- Copy of DD214, if Veteran status;
- Valid Hawaii Food Handlers Card;
- Demonstrate progressively increasing experience in the passenger vessel industry demonstrating the ability to handle growing levels of responsibility;
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills;
- Ability to effectively interact with the passengers, riders and crew;
- Ability to work in fast-paced, quickly-changing environment;
- Carry out duties consistent with an understanding that with all marine duties time is of the essence;
- Ability to use independent judgment and discretion, and develop and execute effective, efficient, safe and compliant solutions to issues within areas of responsibility;
- Computer literacy with MS Office and company software programs and devices
- Submit to and pass alcohol and drug tests as mandated by the USCG including but not limited to pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion and post-accident/incident testing.
Minimum Qualifications:
Weekend and/or evening work is required as necessary to carry out responsibilities; Must regularly and reliably report to work on time; Able to perform duties aboard Company vessels operating in harbors and nearshore and open ocean waters, in hot and humid conditions in the sun; Twisting, crouching and bending; and Able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
Pay: $50.00 - $60.00 per hour
