The Fire Watch Helper is responsible for monitoring work areas where hot work operations such as welding, cutting, grinding, and burning are being performed. This position helps prevent fires by maintaining constant surveillance of the work area, identifying potential hazards, and responding quickly to emergency situations. The Fire Watch Helper ensures compliance with shipyard safety regulations, company policies, and OSHA fire protection requirements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Monitor hot work activities to detect signs of fire, smoke, sparks, or unsafe conditions.
- Maintain continuous observation of assigned work areas during welding, cutting, grinding, and other hot work operations.
- Ensure fire extinguishers and other firefighting equipment are present, accessible, and ready for use.
- Inspect work areas before, during, and after hot work to verify combustible materials have been removed or adequately protected.
- Immediately report unsafe conditions, fires, injuries, or incidents to the supervisor and safety personnel.
- Remain on site for the designated fire watch period following completion of hot work to ensure no smoldering materials remain.
- Assist welders, fitters, and other trades personnel by maintaining a safe work environment.
- Maintain housekeeping standards and keep work areas free of debris and fire hazards.
- Follow all shipyard safety procedures, permit requirements, and personal protective equipment (PPE) guidelines.
- Attend required safety meetings and trainings.
- Assist with moving hoses, fire extinguishers, and other safety equipment as directed.
- Maintain communication with craft personnel and supervisors regarding workplace hazards and changing conditions.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to recognize potential fire hazards and unsafe conditions.
- Must be able to successfully complete Fire Watch and Shipyard Safety Training.
- Ability to work in confined spaces, aboard vessels, and in various weather conditions.
- Reliable attendance and strong attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Shipyard Experience a plus
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, climb ladders, and work for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to wear required PPE, including hard hat, safety glasses, respirator, hearing protection, gloves, and safety harness when required.
- Ability to work in hot, cold, noisy, and industrial environments.
- Ability to access vessels, barges, dry docks, and elevated work areas safely.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Basic understanding of shipyard safety practices.
- Knowledge of fire prevention and emergency response procedures.
- Ability to remain alert and focused for extended periods.
- Strong observation and hazard recognition skills.
- Effective communication skills.
Work Environment
Work is performed in a marine industrial setting, including shipyards, vessels, dry docks, fabrication shops, and waterfront facilities. Exposure to welding sparks, fumes, noise, varying temperatures, and marine conditions should be expected.
Pay: $12.00 - $20.00 per hour
