POSITION SUMMARY
The Oligo Synthesis Chemist is responsible for the production, optimization, and quality of synthetic oligonucleotides using automated DNA synthesizers. This role involves executing synthesis workflows, troubleshooting production issues, maintaining laboratory equipment, documenting manufacturing activities, and supporting continuous process improvement. The successful candidate will work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure high-quality products and efficient laboratory operations.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Perform routine oligonucleotide synthesis using automated DNA synthesizers in accordance with established SOPs.
- Execute downstream processing, including deprotection, purification, desalting, quantification, and quality control of synthesized oligonucleotides.
- Ensure all production activities comply with laboratory quality standards and established operating procedures.
- Maintain accurate and complete laboratory documentation, including batch records, production logs, and experimental data.
- Monitor synthesis performance and investigate production deviations or quality issues. Assist in root cause analysis and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
- Perform routine maintenance, calibration, and basic troubleshooting of oligonucleotide synthesizers and other laboratory equipment.
- Assist in process optimization and technology improvements to enhance synthesis efficiency, product quality, and laboratory productivity.
- Collaborate with Manufacturing, Quality Control, Sequencing, and Gene Synthesis teams to support production schedules and customer requirements.
- Maintain laboratory cleanliness, safety, and compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION:
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific discipline.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
- Demonstrated experience establishing or scaling an oligonucleotide synthesis laboratory or manufacturing operation from the ground up is strongly preferred.
- Experience developing, implementing, and optimizing oligonucleotide synthesis workflows in a production environment.
- Experience writing, validating, and maintaining SOPs, work instructions, and production documentation.
- Experience with automated oligonucleotide synthesis or nucleic acid manufacturing is required.
- Experience with HPLC, LC-MS, UV spectrophotometry, or other analytical techniques.
- Experience working in a GLP- or ISO-compliant laboratory environment is preferred.
SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
- Required Skills
- Extensive knowledge of phosphoramidite-based oligonucleotide synthesis chemistry and automated synthesizer operation.
- Proven hands-on experience independently performing the complete oligonucleotide production workflow, including synthesis, cleavage/deprotection, purification, QC, troubleshooting, and release.
- Demonstrated ability to establish new laboratory workflows, optimize production processes, and implement best practices for routine manufacturing.
- Experience developing, writing, and training personnel on SOPs, work instructions, and laboratory documentation.
- Ability to install, qualify, maintain, and troubleshoot production equipment.
- Experience transferring manufacturing processes and training technical staff through hands-on instruction.
