We are seeking a part-time Assessment Developer for the Multilingual Literacy Screener (MLS). The MLS is a computerized test for newcomer immigrants to the U.S. who may have experienced an interruption in their education.
We are currently seeking writers to create and edit content for a K-9 reading comprehension assessment in Brazilian Portuguese. Reading passages and questions will be aligned to home-country reading levels in Brazil and cross-referenced with New York State Next Generation Learning Standards.
Successful candidates will have strong written proficiency in Brazilian Portuguese and experience with multiple choice assessment development. We are looking to hire two to three writers to collaborate on test development under the guidance of the Reading Comprehension Test Coordinator and Project Director. The team will be responsible for developing:
- Early Literacy Items (Kindergarten and Grade 1) measuring skills in letter identification and simple sentence reading.
- Reading comprehension passages and corresponding multiple-choice questions for grades 2-9. Questions will be aligned to curricular standards.
The team will work together to develop and review content. Individuals with complementary skill sets will be selected so that while no individual will necessarily have the full range of skills, between all team members together, all required areas will be covered. We therefore encourage individuals with a subset of these skills to apply.
Responsibilities (individuals will perform a subset of tasks)
- Perform curricular research for early literacy items.
- Develop early literacy items.
- Review early literacy items.
- Perform curricular research for passages at grades 2-9.
- Develop reading passage content for grades 2-9.
- Develop multiple choice questions for reading passage content for grades 2-9.
- Review reading passages and multiple choice questions for grades 2-9.
- Review all test material to ensure that it is appropriate for students from Brazil.
- Copyedit and format reading passages and multiple choice questions for grades 2-9.
Required Qualifications:
- Professional written proficiency in Brazilian Portuguese.
- Background in Literacy Education, Linguistics, Portuguese Language and Literacy, or related fields.
- Experience writing texts and questions aligned to specific pre-elementary, elementary, and/or middle school grade levels.
- Academic content knowledge within the range of grade levels K-9.
- Ability to use Google Docs and Google Meet.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of curricular standards and the education system in Brazil.
- Knowledge of the NYS Next Generation Learning Standards (NGLS) or Common Core.
- Experience writing multiple-choice questions with appropriate distractors.
- Experience working with Portuguese-speaking students who may have faced an interruption in their formal schooling.
- Experience with Portuguese to English and English to Portuguese translation.
Rate and hours: $27.50/hour, 15 hours per week
Target position dates: July 2026 - June 2027
Location: This is a fully remote position.
