Yeshivat Yavneh is an early childhood through eighth grade Orthodox Jewish Day school serving 500 students in the Hancock Park area of Los Angeles.
Job Summary
Our ideal candidate will possess a strong background in history and social studies content, a passion for teaching early adolescents, and the ability to support our instructional program to promote students' active inquiry, discovery, and learning. The Middle School Social Studies Teacher will deliver engaging, standards-aligned instruction to separate boys and girls sections in Grades 6–8, adapt materials and methods to meet students' varying readiness, interests, and learning profiles, and partner with colleagues and parents to promote each student's motivation, work habits, and growth mindset.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Plan and teach Social Studies to separate boys and girls sections in Grades 6–8 in accordance with the school's curriculum (TCI), scope and sequence, and pacing guide;
- Maintain consistency of curriculum, pacing, and academic expectations across both the boys and girls sections while responding to the distinct needs of each group;
- Design instruction that builds historical thinking skills, including analysis of primary and secondary sources, chronological reasoning, evidence-based argumentation, and geographic literacy;
- Develop student research, writing, and discussion skills through document-based questions, projects, and structured academic conversation;
- Use a variety of assessment practices to monitor, guide, and support student learning and to adjust teaching to meet student needs;
- Adapt materials and methods to support students with diverse learning profiles, including both enrichment and remediation;
- Work collaboratively with the grade-level team to design and implement cross-discipline curriculum and projects, including connections to Language Arts and Judaic Studies where appropriate;
- Foster a classroom community founded on trust, respect, consideration for self and others, inclusiveness, curiosity, growth mindsets, and joy;
- Promote in students self-awareness, self-regulation, self-advocacy, moral sensitivity, integrity, and mutual responsibility;
- Maintain accurate records, grades, and timely communication with families regarding student progress;
- Communicate on a regular basis with the Principal and the Director of Teaching and Learning to discuss curriculum, pacing, and student progress;
- Participate in faculty meetings, professional learning, and school-wide events;
- Identify and attend professional conferences;
- Supervision duties as needed outside of the classroom, including recess, Specialists' classes, and drop-off or pick-up times;
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in History, Social Science, Education, or a related field required; teaching credential preferred
- Minimum 1 year teaching experience in a classroom or equivalent program
- Experience teaching middle school students preferred
- Excellent organizational skills
- Strong interpersonal communication skills, verbal skills, and written skills
- Patient, flexible, and kind when working with students, families, colleagues, staff, and administration, both one-on-one and as a member of a team
- Able to maintain confidentiality in all matters relating to the school and its faculty, students, and families
- Ability to balance varied responsibilities and priorities in a diverse and complex educational environment
