Position Summary
The Finance Director is a senior leadership role responsible for the strategic and operational
oversight of the school’s financial functions. This position ensures the financial health,
sustainability, and integrity of the institution while supporting its mission and long-term goals.
The Finance Director supervises the Business Office Manager and Accounts Payable (AP) Clerk and partners closely with the Head of School and Board of Trustees.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Strategy
● Develop and implement financial strategies aligned with the school’s mission and
strategic plan
● Advise the Head of School and Board on financial planning, budgeting, and risk
management
● Provide regular financial reporting, analysis, and forecasts to support decision-making
● Serve as a key member of the school’s leadership team
Budgeting & Financial Management
● Lead the annual budgeting process, including department collaboration and consolidation
● Monitor budget performance and provide variance analysis
● Oversee cash flow management, investments, and reserves
● Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting (monthly, quarterly, and annual)
Accounting & Compliance
● Ensure compliance with GAAP and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations
● Oversee preparation for annual audits and serve as liaison to external auditors
● Maintain strong internal controls and financial policies
● Oversee tax filings and regulatory reporting as applicable
Financial Systems & Payroll Oversight
● Oversee the selection, implementation, and maintenance of financial software platforms
(e.g., accounting, budgeting, tuition management systems)
● Ensure data integrity, system security, and efficient integration between financial systems
● Evaluate and improve financial processes through effective use of technology
● Oversee all payroll functions, ensuring accurate and timely processing for faculty and
staff
● Ensure compliance with payroll tax regulations, wage and hour laws, and benefits
deductions
● Collaborate with HR on payroll-related matters including benefits, onboarding, and
compensation changes
Team Leadership & Supervision
● Supervise, mentor, and evaluate the Business Office Manager and AP Clerk
● Foster a collaborative, accountable, and service-oriented business office culture
● Ensure efficient workflows and professional development within the team
Tuition & Revenue Oversight
● Oversee tuition billing, collection processes, and financial aid coordination
● Partner with admissions and advancement teams on enrollment and revenue forecasting
Operational Support
● Collaborate with school leadership on contracts, vendor relationships, and procurement
● Support facilities planning and capital projects from a financial perspective
● Oversee insurance, risk management, and benefits coordination
Qualifications
● Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or related field
(CPA or MBA preferred)
● Minimum of 5–7 years of progressive financial leadership experience
● Experience in an educational or nonprofit setting strongly preferred
● Demonstrated experience managing staff and developing high-performing teams
● Experience with financial software systems and payroll administration (SAGE, ADP,
QBO)
