Trio Design Build — Now Hiring: Structural Engineer / Architectural Designer
Location: Newton, MA (on-site with regular job site visits) Type: Full-Time Compensation: Competitive salary based on experience + benefits
About Trio Design Build
Trio Design Build is a high-end custom home builder serving the Greater Boston area, with a focus on Newton, Needham, Brookline, Wellesley, and Cambridge. For over eight years, we've specialized in luxury new construction, whole-home gut renovations, and major additions, delivered through a true design-build model that keeps every phase of the project under one roof.
Trio is a vertically integrated company that is actively scaling. As we grow, we're investing in the people, systems, and infrastructure of a modern construction company.
Collaboration is at the core of how we work. Our design and engineering team works hand-in-hand with our estimating department, client relations team, project managers, procurement, and field crews every day. Designs are priced, coordinated, and vetted for buildability in real time — not handed off and hoped for. You'll be part of a connected team where estimators inform design decisions, PMs bring field feedback straight back to the drawing board, and client relations keeps everyone aligned with what the homeowner actually wants.
Our projects reflect the caliber of the neighborhoods we build in: architecturally distinctive homes with high-performance systems, smart home integration, and craftsmanship built to last generations. For the right candidate, joining Trio now means real growth opportunity inside a company that's building for the long term.
The Role
We are hiring a Structural Engineer / Architectural Designer to work directly under our Lead Architect, supporting the design, engineering, and documentation of luxury custom homes and major renovations from schematic design through construction. This is a hands-on production and support role in a true design-build environment — your drawings get built by our own crews, and you'll be in the field regularly, not just behind a screen. It's an excellent position for someone who wants to grow toward licensure and leadership inside a firm that controls the entire build.
Responsibilities
- Support the Lead Architect in design development and production of permit and construction drawing sets in a 3D BIM environment (Revit or equivalent)
- Develop 3D structural plans and models — foundations, framing, steel, engineered lumber, and floor truss systems — fully coordinated with the architectural model
- Assist with MEP plans as needed — mechanical, electrical, and plumbing layouts for residential projects, including heat pump HVAC, ERV/ventilation, lighting control systems, low-voltage/AV, and generator integration
- Assist with permitting — prepare and assemble permit submissions, zoning analysis, and supporting documentation for building department, special permit, and ZBA filings; track applications through approval
- Perform regular job site visits — field measure existing conditions, verify as-builts, document progress, support RFI responses, and coordinate with our project managers and carpentry crews
- Design to Massachusetts stretch and specialized opt-in energy codes, including all-electric pathways
- Collaborate daily with estimating, client relations, project managers, and procurement to keep designs priced, coordinated, and buildable
- Support clients through selections and design development alongside our client relations team
Requirements
- Degree in Architecture, Civil/Structural Engineering, or a related field
- 2+ years of residential design or engineering experience; high-end residential and construction documentation experience a plus
- Proficiency producing 3D structural plans and models — Revit strongly preferred; Tekla, RISA, or similar analysis tools a plus
- Ability to produce MEP plans a plus — mechanical, electrical, and plumbing layouts for residential projects
- Familiarity with Massachusetts building and energy codes; Newton-area zoning and permitting experience a plus
- Comfortable in the field — reliable transportation and willingness to visit active job sites regularly
- Strong design sensibility across traditional and contemporary styles
- Rendering and client presentation skills (Enscape, Lumion, Twinmotion, or similar) a plus
- Licensed engineer (PE) a plus — licensed candidates will be prioritized; we also support your path to licensure (PE or AXP) if you're working toward it
- Strong communication skills — you'll work with architects, estimators, PMs, and field crews, not just drawings
Why Trio
- True design-build: your work gets built by our own teams — no handoff, no dilution, full feedback loop from field to drawing board
- Deep collaboration: daily work alongside estimating, client relations, project management, and procurement
- High-spec projects: luxury custom homes with smart home systems and complex structural work — the kind of projects that keep the work interesting
- Growth: we are actively scaling and investing in our team, systems, and infrastructure
How to Apply
Apply via Indeed. Please include your resume and a portfolio or drawing samples showing structural model work and 3D work; MEP experience a plus.
