Responsibilities
- Safely operate commercial vehicles such as school buses, transit buses, and paratransit vans in accordance with all traffic laws and vehicle codes.
- Provide excellent customer service by assisting passengers, including children, seniors, and individuals with disabilities, with boarding, seating, and wheelchair assistance.
- Follow emergency response procedures for transportation incidents, including CPR, first aid, and emergency stop procedures when necessary.
- Maintain discipline among passengers by applying behavior management techniques and enforcing school or transit policies to ensure a safe environment.
- Conduct pre-trip inspections of vehicles to verify safety features are operational; report any mechanical issues promptly.
- Respond quickly to traffic changes or route adjustments to ensure on-time arrivals while prioritizing passenger safety.
- Communicate effectively with dispatchers, passengers, and colleagues using clear language; demonstrate multilingual skills if applicable to serve diverse communities.
- Adhere strictly to transportation safety regulations and local/state laws governing commercial driving practices.
- Assist passengers with special needs by providing wheelchair assistance and ensuring compliance with accessibility standards.
- Complete detailed logs of trips, incidents, and vehicle inspections accurately and promptly.
Experience
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements for passenger transport (e.g., P endorsement for passenger vehicles).
- Proven experience in bus driving, school bus operation, or transit bus operation is highly preferred.
- Knowledge of traffic laws, vehicle codes, and transportation safety regulations at the state and local levels.
- Experience working with children or seniors in a transportation setting is advantageous.
- Familiarity with emergency response procedures including CPR, first aid, emergency stop procedures, and behavior management techniques.
- Strong communication skills in English; bilingual abilities are a plus for serving diverse communities.
- Ability to perform heavy lifting when necessary for passenger assistance or vehicle maintenance tasks.
- Demonstrated ability to respond quickly to traffic changes or route disruptions while maintaining safety standards.
- Excellent writing skills for completing logs and incident reports accurately.
