The College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions, Department of Allied and Population Health at South Dakota State University is seeking applicants for a Department Head. This position is responsible for academic leadership and administrative management of the department in support of the mission and goals of the Department, College and University. This person is a member of the College’s Executive Team, reporting to the Dean of the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions, and will have an academic appointment within the Department. This position is located in Brookings, South Dakota and is a 12-month, full-time, term, benefits-eligible position.
This position is eligible to current, full-time, permanent employees within the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions.
The Department of Allied and Population Health consists of medical laboratory science (MLS), respiratory care, and public health programs. Offering a variety of certificate, undergraduate, and graduate degrees. The department offers both in-person and online degree options, which provide flexible opportunities for working professionals to earn degrees at their own pace. Several of the programs are designed to offer students or working professionals the opportunity to cross-train or layer their education through multiple degrees.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsibilities include guiding the department regarding professional education, research/scholarly activities, service, and faculty recruitment and development. The Department of Allied and Population Health consists of 15 faculty and multiple research personnel.
As the Department Head for Allied and Population Health, expectations are based on
these approximate percentages of responsibilities:
- (45%) Administrative leadership to the Department.
- (40%) Instruction to support the academic programs of the College.
- (10%) Research and scholarship contributions related to research within the
- department and/or scholarship of teaching and learning.
- (5%) Service contributions to the College, University, and professional
- discipline.
SPECIFIC ASPECTS OF DUTIES:
- Assist in the creation and implementation of a vision for the Department.
- Oversee the Department’s clinical partnerships.
- Design programs targeted to improve student retention.
- Supervise and mentor the faculty and staff within the Department.
- Assess the outcomes of newly implemented initiatives in the Department.
- Respond on an ad hoc basis to student concerns and questions.

QUALIFICATIONS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Terminal degree in discipline, including PhD or Pharm.D.., by date of application.
- Must be a current permanent employee of South Dakota State University, within the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions
- A record of academic and scholarly achievements commensurate with the academic rank of professor per department standards and BOR policy requirements.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
- Organizational and time management skills;
- Strong interpersonal skills;
- Ability to work as a contributing team member;
- Experience using technology in managing and/or delivering educational programs;
- Ability or potential to plan, develop, implement, and evaluate educational materials and direct effective programs.
- Valid driver’s license, or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire, and willingness to travel.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to assess outcomes of initiatives.
- Experience developing and implementing strategic initiatives aimed at fulfilling the mission of a department and/or college.
- Previous leadership and management experience
- Ability to mentor students, faculty, and staff members.
- A track-record of collaborating effectively and building relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
