Armed Campus Security Officer
SEC SHIELD | Muskegon Community College | Muskegon, Michigan
SEC SHIELD is building a dedicated campus safety team for Muskegon Community College and is seeking experienced law enforcement and military professionals to join us as Armed Campus Security Officers.
This is an opportunity to continue serving in a meaningful role while becoming part of a college community. Our officers are not simply posted at a door or assigned to watch cameras. They are visible, engaged professionals who build relationships with students, faculty, staff, and visitors while helping create a safe, welcoming environment across campus.
We believe effective campus security starts with judgment, restraint, professionalism, and relationships. Our officers are expected to recognize concerns early, communicate effectively, de-escalate situations whenever possible, and be prepared to respond decisively when an emergency occurs.
What You'll Do
As an Armed Campus Security Officer, you will help support the day-to-day safety and security of Muskegon Community College facilities, including the Main Campus, Sturrus Technology Center, and Ottawa Center.
Responsibilities include:
- Maintain a visible, approachable, and professional presence throughout assigned campus buildings and grounds
- Conduct regular foot and vehicle patrols of buildings, parking areas, and campus grounds
- Respond to emergencies, alarms, suspicious activity, and calls for service
- Coordinate and cooperate with local law enforcement, fire, and EMS during incidents
- Provide safety escorts and other assistance to students, faculty, staff, and visitors
- Monitor building access, alarms, security cameras, and other campus safety systems
- Assist with securing buildings and identifying potential safety or security concerns
- Support special events, athletics, performances, commencement, and other college activities
- Help manage access, traffic, and crowds when needed
- Enforce College safety, parking, access, and campus policies professionally, with an emphasis on education and voluntary compliance
- Complete clear, accurate incident reports and daily activity documentation
- Provide First Aid, CPR, AED, and Stop the Bleed response when necessary
Who We're Looking For
All SEC SHIELD armed officers will have a formal law enforcement or military background.
We are looking for mature professionals who know how to interact with people, assess situations, and make good decisions. The right candidate understands that carrying a firearm comes with significant responsibility and that de-escalation, communication, and sound judgment should always come first.
Candidates should have:
- Prior law enforcement or military experience
- The ability to qualify to the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) firearms standard
- The ability to meet all State of Michigan requirements for armed security work
- Strong judgment and the ability to remain calm during emergencies
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- The ability to work professionally with students, faculty, staff, visitors, and members of the public
- Strong written communication skills for reports and documentation
- The physical ability to conduct regular foot and vehicle patrols across a large college campus in varying weather conditions
- A valid Michigan driver's license and acceptable driving record
- The ability to successfully complete required criminal background, fingerprinting, driving record, and registry checks
Experience working in an educational, campus, or other public-facing environment is a plus.
Training That Goes Beyond Traditional Security
SEC SHIELD invests heavily in training because we expect more from our officers than a traditional security company.
Our training program is designed specifically for educational environments and includes:
- Emergency and critical incident response
- De-escalation strategies
- Active violence response
- Behavioral threat assessment fundamentals
- First Aid, CPR, AED, and Stop the Bleed
- Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) intervention
- Professional conduct and report writing
- Privacy, confidentiality, FERPA, Title IX, and Clery Act requirements
- Site-specific training on Muskegon Community College procedures and systems
Armed officers also complete MCOLES-standard firearms qualification and ongoing requalification, along with scenario-based and tactical emergency medical training. Training is provided through live instruction, supervised field training, and continuing education throughout the year.
