Overview
The veterinary assistant supports veterinarians and credentialed technicians in delivering safe, high-quality, and efficient medical care to patients. This role is hands-on with animals, client-facing with pet owners, and operational support. The focus is on patient comfort and safety, customer service, and maintaining an efficient, clean hospital environment.
Description of Duties
Patient Care/Medical Support
- Act as a patient advocate at all times.
- Deliver timely and efficient communication to clients and the treatment team to limit human error, increase safety, and foster professional relationships.
- Collect all pertinent patient medical history and any current concerns/questions to maintain accurate and detailed patient medical records.
- Ensure patient, client and associate safety by practicing safe patient restraint/handling during exams, procedures, and treatments.
- Perform patient comfort tasks (walking, feeding, cleaning kennels).
- Assist in preparing and collecting patient laboratory samples (blood, fecal, urine, skin, ear) and analyzing the samples with the appropriate laboratory equipment
- Prepare instruments, equipment, and supplies for appointments and procedures.
- Provide assistance in surgery, when applicable, to prepare patients for a surgical procedure, monitor and record vital signs, perform scaling and polishing of teeth, and recover patients within the appropriate policies and procedures.
- Create detailed discharge instructions and dental reports for client review for dental procedures.
- Perform diagnostic imaging, including radiographs and dental radiographs, following safety protocols.
- Administer medications as directed.
- Set up and clean exam rooms before and after appointments.
- Follow OSHA regulations.
Client Service
- Provide professional, courteous, and gold standard service to patients, clients and other staff members at all times.
- Educate clients on preventive care, post-operative care, and medication administration.
- Support front desk staff as needed: check-in and out, invoicing, appointment scheduling, and client call backs.
- Educate clients on home care instructions.
- Support euthanasia appointments with sensitivity and compassion.
Facility & Equipment Maintenance
- Daily cleaning, sanitization, laundry, trash, and exam room turnover.
- Restock and maintain treatment, surgery, and pharmacy areas.
- Maintain inventory counts and notify Practice Manager of low stock.
- Assist in daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly equipment maintenance as needed.
Additional job duties as assigned.
Requirements
Must have
- 5+ years of experience as a veterinary assistant.
- Fear-Free certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Ability to lift/carry/move up to 50 lbs (without accommodation).
- Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time.
- Ability to bend, kneel, and crouch.
- Ability to work at a computer for long periods of time.
- Comfortability working in an environment with loud noises.
- Comfortability working in an environment with exposure to radiation (very small amounts), biological hazards and medication/controlled substances.
- Strong written and verbal communication.
- Ability to multitask in a fast-changing environment.
- Resilience under urgent emotional situations (pet illness, euthanasia).
- Strong communication and team collaboration skills
- Experience with hospital PIMS, specifically Digitail.
