Responsibilities
- Review and interpret medical documentation to assign appropriate CPT (Current Procedural Terminology), ICD-9, and ICD-10 codes for accurate billing and reimbursement.
- Submit claims electronically through EMR/EHR systems, ensuring compliance with insurance requirements and coding standards.
- Follow up on unpaid or denied claims by communicating with insurance providers and patients to resolve discrepancies or obtain additional information.
- Maintain detailed medical records and ensure all billing data aligns with medical records, adhering to privacy regulations.
- Calculate DRG (Diagnosis-Related Group) assignments for inpatient hospital stays when applicable, supporting proper reimbursement levels.
- Stay updated on changes in medical coding regulations, insurance policies, and billing procedures to ensure ongoing compliance.
- Collaborate with medical office staff to verify patient information, insurance details, and treatment documentation for billing accuracy.
Skills
- Strong knowledge of medical coding including CPT coding, ICD-9, ICD-10, and DRG classifications.
- Proficiency in medical billing processes within EMR/EHR systems.
- Familiarity with medical terminology, medical records management, and healthcare documentation standards.
- Experience in medical collection efforts to recover outstanding payments efficiently.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills to ensure precise coding and billing accuracy.
- Ability to interpret complex insurance policies and navigate denial management effectively.
- Prior experience in a medical office setting is preferred to understand clinical workflows and documentation practices.
