The Laboratory Assistant I (LA I) works with patients in the medical setting to obtain blood specimens through venipuncture and/or capillary puncture, as well as non-blood specimens such as urine, stool, sputum, and throat swabs for laboratory testing. Performs screening/waived tests and non-DOT drug screens. Processes and properly labels specimens to prepare them for laboratory/reference laboratory testing, creates, receives, and completes batches from satellite clinics to ensure all specimens are properly tracked. In addition to laboratory testing, the LA I is responsible for performing EKGs at all locations and Holter monitors in the Emergency Department. To be successful in this position, the LA I must be thorough when carrying out duties, ensure proper test orders, know the correct order of draw for specimens, and provide an excellent patient experience. This position reports to the Phlebotomy Supervisor.
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Completion of an accredited phlebotomy program preferred.
- Valid Illinois driver’s license
- BLS certification through AHA preferred
