SUMMARY: This position is responsible for skilled work in operating a variety of heavy equipment and/or dump trucks and the employee operates the most complex equipment. The incumbent must learn department procedures, safety regulations and pass all necessary safety training courses and must be available for emergency on-call duty as required. The position will perform any other duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Driving tandem axle dump truck in hauling asphalt, sand, dirt, gravel, and other materials to job site
- Operating a roller, motor grader, gradall or track loader, bulldozer, and front-end loader in performing skilled work on a construction, paving, or drainage project
- Operating tractor with bush hog or long arm to mow county right-of-ways
- Performing basic preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and/or vehicles by checking tires, refilling oil and fluids, and cleaning equipment
- Operating a fuel truck
- Hauling equipment on trailer behind a dump truck
- Assisting crew leader or supervisor in estimating amount and type of materials, tools, and supplies needed at the job site
- May perform flagging duties for traffic control on a job site
- Performing lower classification job duties as needed
- Performing emergency call-back duty as required
- Job duties vary for each employee depending on crew or work assignment
- Performing other duties as assigned

MINIMUM EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or General Educational Development Certificate (GED)
- Two years professional related work experience
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
- Preferred: Experience in Right-of-Way mowing and in using weed eaters, chain saws and an assortment of various other equipment
- Mandatory – At the time of application - Must have and maintain a valid United States Driver's License (Class C), CDL (Class A), and a satisfactory motor vehicle record (MVR) and the ability and willingness to drive a county vehicle; if assigned job duties require the use of a vehicle
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be 18 years of age or older
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
- Possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver's License (Class C) and a satisfactory motor vehicle record (MVR)
- Possess and maintain of a valid Georgia Commercial Driver's License (Class A), if assigned to drive vehicles requiring this license
- National Safety Council Flagging certified, or certification within six months of employment
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of or ability to learn county and department operations, ordinances, policies, procedures, terminology, and materials as they relate to assignment
- Knowledge of building, maintenance, and construction principles, techniques, guidelines, practices, and equipment as related to assignment; grading, construction, paving
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary for the safe operation of equipment, tools, machinery, and vehicles as required by assignment
- Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and repair of all department equipment, tools, machinery, and vehicles as required by assignment
- Knowledge of specialized software, machinery, materials, terminology, and/or forms essential to the assignment
- Skill in estimating materials required for project
- Skill in handling and operating all assigned equipment, tools, and/or vehicles in a safe and proficient manner
- Skill in performing tasks and completing assigned jobs efficiently and correctly
- Ability to apply common sense to understand, follow, and complete verbal and written instructions
- Ability to communicate and interact clearly and effectively with all those contacted in the course of work in a professional and courteous manner, both orally and in writing; establishing and maintaining effective, professional, and cordial working relationships
- Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence and memos, policies and procedures, project blueprints or diagrams
- Ability and willingness to meet physical requirements and perform labor (including lifting and carrying heavy objects) outdoors, while working in and adjacent to the roadway for extended periods of time
- Ability and willingness to work with and assist other laborers to complete assigned project
- Ability to work in a team setting
- Ability to work independently in the absence of specific instructions or direct supervision
